Felt a tinge of nostalgia & lots of pride visiting @indiannavy #Swavlamban2026 today. Great to be back among the innovators & the Navy ecosystem #NIIO #TDAC that has grown so much since the 1st edition when the 75 #SPRINT challenges were launched by the Hon’ble PM @narendramodi. The products are now developed, inducted & some even proved their mettle in #OpSindoor!
I Will be sharing posts on the firms I interacted with over the next few days.
At the entrance itself I saw Matangi (the Autonomous Weaponised Boat Swarm / Autonomous Surface Vessel by @SagarDefence). This is by now a familiar success story of indigenous unmanned maritime capability that needs little introduction. I loved the caption on the boat “this is what ordinary boys from indian villages can dream” !!! Yes, indeed. This and much more👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻@Nikunj_Parashar @Mdlski @dang_lakshay.
Right next to it, at the entrance itself, was an interesting setup from Combat Robotics @CombatRobIndia (Pune). I think it looks (😉😂) like a rugged cable/hose reel system marked “for tough conditions”. Anyone know the exact application they’re demonstrating for the Navy? Any guesses?

🇮🇳 Quantum-Secure Comms Take Flight: Airborne QKD Demonstrated at MCTE Mhow
📌 WHAT: C-DAC (Centre for Development of Advanced Computing), led by Dr. Anindita Banerjee, successfully demonstrated a fully device-independent, entanglement-based Quantum Key Distribution (QKD) system — integrated with Post-Quantum Cryptography (PQC) — using an airborne quantum payload carried by an unmanned aerial system (UAS), at the Military College of Telecommunication Engineering (MCTE), Mhow.
🏢 WHO: C-DAC (@cdacindia); Dr. Anindita Banerjee (lead); UAS platform contributed by Sagar Defence Engineering (@SagarDefence); hosted at MCTE, Mhow
📅 WHEN: Reported 23 Oct 2026
🎯 WHAT IS THIS? (IN SIMPLE WORDS)
Quantum Key Distribution lets two parties share an encryption key using the physics of quantum entanglement — any attempt to intercept the key physically disturbs the quantum state, making eavesdropping detectable rather than just difficult. Doing this from an airborne platform rather than fixed fibre-optic cable means the secure key can be distributed to mobile or field-deployed ground stations — relevant for military communications where you can't always lay down dedicated fibre. This demonstration proved the full chain: drone-based key distribution → encrypted file transfer → successful decryption at the ground station, in real time.
⚙️ TECH SPECS
• QKD approach: fully device-independent, entanglement-based — a more advanced/secure QKD variant than simpler protocols (like B92), since it doesn't require trusting the internal workings of the quantum devices themselves
• Integration: combined with Post-Quantum Cryptography (PQC) — a hybrid approach pairing quantum-physics-based key distribution with cryptographic algorithms designed to resist future quantum-computer attacks
• Platform: airborne quantum payload on a UAS (contributed by Sagar Defence Engineering), distributing entanglement-based keys to ground stations
• Demonstrated capability: secure, real-time encrypted file transfer with successful decryption at the receiving end
• Attendees: Lt Gen Praveen Bakshi (Commandant, MCTE); Brig R.S. Randhawa; Brig Deven Makhija; Lt Col Mayank Joshi; Prof R.M. Bodade; Dr. Amit Barve; Prof Vimal Bhatia (IIT Indore); Dr. Shashi Prabhakar (Physical Research Laboratory)
🧠 OUR ANALYSIS
• This builds directly on C-DAC's existing MeitY-funded "Agile and Adhoc Quantum Communication using Drone" programme, also led by Dr. Banerjee — earlier work in that programme demonstrated drone-linked hybrid quantum/classical networks and mobile free-space QKD links, so this MCTE demonstration reads as a meaningful advance (device-independent, entanglement-based QKD + PQC) rather than a one-off event.
• Device-independent QKD is a technically harder, more secure variant than most earlier demonstrated protocols — if this proof-of-concept holds up under further testing, it's a genuine step up in sophistication for India's quantum communications programme.
• Holding this at MCTE (the Army's premier telecom/signals training institution) rather than a civilian lab signals this is being evaluated with military field application specifically in mind.
❓ WHAT WE DON'T KNOW
• Technical performance figures (key rate, QBER, link distance/altitude) for this specific demonstration
• Timeline toward any operational deployment or further field trials
• Independent (non-participant) verification beyond Sagar Defence Engineering's own announcement

Sharp thread. Do read.
The core issue is exactly what @joe_sameer flags: iDEX/TDF & even successful trials create technical validation, but they *do not* create revenue visibility (or institutional commitment).
The valley of death is not mainly a capital problem. It is a demand-side problem. Until the user (and the procurement system) treats a successful prototype as the start of a production learning curve with clear follow-on orders, multi-year visibility & the willingness to absorb early iterations…startups will remain stuck funding certification & scale themselves.
Grants de-risk the technology for the Services; they *do not* de-risk the business for investors.
Dual-use and exports help, as some (very few) firms have shown, but they are workarounds & not always feasible. The structural fix has to come from the demand side: converting a higher percentage of TRL-7/8 prototypes into contracted production, so that process knowledge accumulates inside Indian firms rather than stopping at the prototype stage. Without that, the valuation discount versus Anduril/Shield AI is rational, not just sceptical.
How do we change this???

Indian startup Twitter just had another round of the “most deep tech is a grift” vs “foundational tech builds the future” fight.
Read @anmolm_ and Pixxel’s @awaisahmedna tweets to get the drift.
It gets sharper when you apply it to aerospace & defence. 1/n

AFAIK, the shortlisting is for a 20×102 mm gun/turret system specifically to replace the existing Nexter THL-20 (20M621) already fitted on Rudra / LCH.
Continuity is the main driver. These platforms are already integrated with a 20 mm…moving to 23 mm would require a new mount, feed system, recoil management & structural clearance work. This is not just a barrel change.
Helicopter guns are also tightly weight- and recoil-constrained. The THL-20 family was chosen precisely because it is a lightweight, low-recoil solution optimised for rotary-wing use.
(On ammunition, the 23mm stocks serve GSh-23 installations on fixed-wing aircraft and some helicopter pods. The Rudra/LCH fleet has been operating with 20mm, so an indigenous 20mm system preserves that logistics stream while removing the foreign turret dependence)
