🐄🧬 An interactive visual explainer on the Oct 2026 H5N1 dairy cattle & human outbreak: • The 14 WA cattle genomes (10 of 14 are 0-SNP identical) • How 4 national selective sweeps squeezed the US reservoir from ~376 → ~7.2 effective herds • Three diverging forks after the bottleneck (including mammalian PB2: T271A + D678G) • Multi-scale ChronAeon TimeTree Nₑ & timing estimates (4–13d local expansion vs. 3–6 mo unsampled stems) Built with SRA de novo assembly + Nextstrain + HyphAeon + ChronAeon 👇 spond.github.io/CV.js/blog/2…

Our paper is out in Nature Communications! We explore how viruses and encapsulins may have evolved from one another, with implications for the evolution of biological compartmentalization. Really happy to share this work! Thanks to all my coauthors! nature.com/articles/s41467-0…

1/ 🚀 Pathoplexus now supports Bundibugyo virus (BDBV), a species of Ebolavirus. BDBV has been associated with past outbreaks of Ebola in the DR Congo and Uganda, & a case was reported today during response to the current Ebola outbreak. pathoplexus.org/ebola-bdbv #ebola #bdbv

Really encouraging to see the complete sequence from this #Andes virus case in Switzerland shared so quickly. Rapid open data sharing is critical during outbreak investigations — it allows the global scientific and public health community to assess relatedness to other cases, monitor for mutations, support diagnostic development, and better understand transmission dynamics in real time. This kind of transparency and collaboration strengthens preparedness everywhere. virological.org/t/complete-s…

Visualize genomic data with ease using gggenomes, an R package that extends ggplot2 to handle and display genomic information intuitively. Whether you’re comparing genomes, analyzing features, or showcasing synteny, gggenomes provides the tools you need to turn complex genomic data into clear, informative visualizations. Why use gggenomes? ✔️ Genomic-focused visualizations: Specifically designed for handling genomic data, including features, alignments, and comparative analysis. ✔️ Versatile and modular: Create detailed and layered plots for diverse genomic scenarios with flexibility for customization. ✔️ Built on ggplot2: Leverages ggplot2’s familiar framework, making it easy for users to adapt and enhance their visualizations. The example visualization shown here is taken directly from the gggenomes GitHub repository, demonstrating how it transforms genomic data into compelling plots: github.com/thackl/gggenomes Curious to learn more about creating data visualizations in R and using tools like ggplot2 and its extensions?
