Ratko Mladić was convicted of genocide, crimes against humanity and war crimes. The return of his remains to Belgrade reminds Europe of the darkest pages in our recent history.
The glorification surrounding his death is incompatible with the values on which the EU path is built. That path requires confronting the past, genuine reconciliation and respecting the victims of war crimes.
The values that underpin our common future are not negotiable.
In this context, I have decided not to proceed with my planned visit to Serbia at this time.

Montenegro’s place inside the EU is now taking shape.
Today, Member States decided to start drafting Montenegro’s EU Accession Treaty.
This is a major step on the path to EU membership, a clear recognition of Montenegro’s progress, and an encouragement to accelerate reforms.

Today at the EU Delegation I hosted a frank and open discussion between EU Member States' ambassadors to Albania and Ms Jorida Tabaku and Mr Oerd Bylykbashi from the Democratic Party. We exchanged views on key bipartisan reforms, such as electoral and territorial reform, and also on democratic participation in the EU integration process of Albania.
