The status quo has failed and US policy toward Israel needs to change.
In a new @NYTimes essay, former Deputy National Security Advisor Jon Finer makes the case for real consequences for Israeli policies that undermine peace, an end to the blank check for Israeli governments, and an American approach that stands up for the rights of both Israelis and Palestinians.

Who else remembers this ? I do
Fatah leader Jibril Rajoub said in an interview with Alaraby TV that Hamas carried out suicide bombings in Israel in 1996 to help Netanyahu win the election, bring down Shimon Peres’s government, and derail the peace process.
Rajoub said his account was based on testimony from the Hamas member who planned the bombings and was arrested by the Preventive Security Service, which Rajoub headed at the time. According to Rajoub, the Hamas member admitted that this was their intention and that the orders came from Hamas leader Khaled Mashal.
Hamas issued a statement later today denouncing Rajoub’s remarks.

Israelis flock from all over the world to vote this government out. #SavingIsraeliDemocracy
We're seeing an unprecedented mobilization of Israelis abroad, flying home to vote for change. The El Al flight from San Francisco on October 25th was full weeks ago.

Why would private equity firms like Bain Capital want to own Gail's? Because like care homes and places to live, bread is a basic human need – and therefore profitable forever.
I explain to @ShelaghFogarty why private equity's hostile takeover of our basic services matters.

Oh!
Major revelation here from @Timodc on the Mike and Kristi Rogers scandal.
We reported that she was Paul Bremer’s press aid in Iraq and that he traveled there frequently as a married member of Congress. He divorced his first wife in 2007 and married Kristi in 2010. Rogers joined the Intel committee in 2005.
In 2006, Kristi launched the U.S. subsidiary of Aegis, a defense contractor, which quickly started getting massive contracts.
Tim Miller adds a key detail: Kristi Clemens was Rogers’ finance director for his 2000 campaign. So they knew each other this entire time.
Rogers and his wife threatened to sue us over our first story. We stand by our reporting.
Exciting possibility

Question is: Was this really a Netanyahu gov't own goal? As the Reform movement is considered more a threat than secular Jews to Israel's ultraorthodox domination, so might Netanyahu & co. perceive progressive Zionism to be a bigger threat than antiZionism.haaretz.com/israel-news/haar…

So Netanyahu is making his closing argument that he and Trump will "finish the job" of changing the regime in Iran.
Never mind that the war launched seven months ago has not come close to that goal. Never mind that the war has caused a global economic and energy shock that shows no sign of abating. Never mind that Iran's control of the Strait of Hormuz, temporarily challenged at tremendous cost by the US military, will be a long-term outcome of this war. Never mind that regime change through air power has no chance of success. Never mind that an actual military regime change strategy would require major US ground forces and casualties, something deeply opposed by the American people.
And Trump, for his part, is no longer focused on the illusion of regime change. He is looking for a deal. Something on Hormuz, something on Iran's nuclear program. Maybe after landing some additional blows, say at Pickaxe Mountain. Essentially something that will allow him to declare victory and walk away. And he hopes that Iran's retaliation for the blows don't completely upend the global economy. There are so many targets in the Gulf Iran has not struck yet -- energy, AI, infrastructure -- and the Saudis are tied up in a battle with the Houthis that could sink them. An attempt to "finish the job" will come at enormous cost.
It's completely understandable that Israelis pine for the end of the Iranian regime, which for decades has called for Israel's destruction, and armed terrorist organizations, pursued a nuclear program, and rained missiles on Israel in pursuit of that goal. In that, Israelis share the goal of millions of Iranians. As soon as this stupid, failed war ends, all nations should recommit to helping the Iranian people free themselves from this tyranny. That is something that must come from within Iran.
But an empty, last-minute pledge by a struggling prime minister to "finish the job", as alluring as it might sound, is just a promise of a forever war, one that the United States, even under Trump's misguided leadership, is not going to undertake, and one that Israel could not see through on its own.

Now explain the arrest of Israel’s former deputy attorney general for taking part in the same peaceful olive harvest.
This was not about harvesting olives.
It was about harvesting headlines.
Brad Lander’s latest stunt is nothing more than a calculated political provocation.
Lander traveled to a foreign country, deliberately entered a restricted security area, and participated in an unauthorized activity without the required coordination.
What makes this stunt even more outrageous is that his own team contacted Israeli representatives in the United States ahead of his visit and was explicitly informed that proper coordination with the relevant authorities was required.
He chose to ignore those instructions.
At a time of heightened security tensions, Israeli security forces have a responsibility to protect lives, prevent dangerous incidents, and maintain public order.
Had anyone been injured as a result of his reckless political theater, Lander would undoubtedly have been among the first to demand that Israeli authorities intervene and provide protection.
Brad Lander came looking for a confrontation. Now he is pretending to be its victim.

In the deepening chaos in the West Bank, the IDF detained several dozen American rabbis and volunteers, including my future Democratic colleague Brad Lander; Mattan Berner-Kadish, who grew up in my district; and at least 31 other American citizens helping Palestinian farmers try to harvest olives in the West Bank under the threat of violence. Meantime, vigilante settlers continue to terrorize Palestinians in the West Bank with scant consequences.
Last week, out-of-control settlers injured an American journalist. Now, the IDF targets volunteers for helping Palestinians harvest olives. The eyes of the world are on the West Bank.
