The Bronkhorstspruit water crisis, and the wider crisis of raw sewage being discharged into our rivers and oceans, raises serious questions about the role of engineers and the engineering profession. Are witnessing a dereliction of professional duty by engineers and engineering professionals entrusted with protecting public health, infrastructure and the environment? We need to establish where authority sits, where professional engineering advice is being ignored, and where accountability ultimately lies. Let’s fix this country. Let us hope that the @PublicProtector's investigation helps uncover the root causes of these failures, strengthens accountability, empowers engineering professionals to fulfil their responsibilities, and ultimately restores affordable, safe and reliable service delivery to our communities. @ECSAOfficial @imesa_za @WaterInstSA @SALGA_Gov

South Africa is blessed with world-class engineering professionals who can turn around service delivery if they are empowered to lead. Where capacity gaps exist, competent consulting engineers stand ready to provide support and strengthen municipal capability. Appointing qualified engineering leaders will help prevent infrastructure failures, improve accountability, and reduce opportunities for waste and corruption. @PresidencyZA, lead a process to appoint professionally qualified City Engineers as Technical Services Managers in every municipality. #WaterCrisis is a want for an engineer

Politicians need votes. All we need is love. Society needs jobs, roads, water and electricity. But none of these services happen sustainably without engineering. No engineers. No infrastructure. No votes. No love. #EngineeringVote #AgendaForEngineering #LGE2026

Your vote is also an engineering vote. Before #LGE2026, ask every political party: What is your agenda for engineering? Look beyond promises. Examine their manifestos and governing records on infrastructure, technical capacity, professional independence and service delivery. Engineering practitioners must make their voices and votes count. #EngineeringVote #Vote #EngineeringInfluence #AgendaForEngineering #ChangingThingsSA

Thank you, Ongama. Media strategy is a necessity if ECSA and its voluntary associations are to effectively influence policymakers and society. Your willingness to help amplify the voice of the engineering profession is most welcome. Engineering leaders at the helm of influence should also engage political analysts and communication strategists to strengthen their advocacy and re-establish the relevance and influence of engineers in national decision-making. #Media #Politics #Engineering #engineers #Influence

Municipal collapse is an engineering failure, not just a political one. It's time to put technical competence at the heart of local government planning ahead of #LGE2026. #ChangingThingsSA #EngineerGeneral Ke nako!

Today we honour Frank Walter Jameson, Pretoria's town engineer and the visionary behind the widespread planting of jacaranda trees that continue to define Gauteng's landscape. His legacy reminds us that engineers shape cities for generations. As we celebrate engineering leadership, let's also call for Technical Services Manager positions in municipalities to be reserved for appropriately qualified engineering professionals. Technical decisions require technical competence. #CityEngineersNow #EngineerGeneralNow #AgendaForEngineering #ChangingThingsSA #LGE2026

Financial audits and public protection are vital, but what about dry taps, potholed roads, and incomplete projects? We need an Engineer-General to hold leadership technically accountable for infrastructure performance. #EngineerGeneralNow #CityEngineersNow #ChangingThingsSA #WozaLGE2026 #LGE2026

The engineering vote is essential to the long-term viability of consulting engineering firms and contractors. Engineers should use their influence, and encourage others, to support leaders who ensure payment for professional services and completed work within 30 days. Late payments weaken engineering businesses and hinder the country’s progress. Leaders who tolerate this practice do not deserve to govern municipalities or earn our votes. #Jikizinto #EngineeringActivism #MunicipalBudget #WozaLGE2026 @CityofJoburgZA @CityTshwane @City_Ekurhuleni @EmfuleniLM @MidvaalLM @Lesedi @city_mogale @MerafongCityLM @RandWestCity1 and other @SALGA_Gov municipalities

Love engineering. Support engineers. Strengthen democracy. No water means compromised dignity, public health, and trust in government. A water crisis is a threat to our democracy. #LGE2026 Politicians must embrace the engineering profession and empower engineers to do their work. @MYANC @Our_DA @MkhontoweSizwex @EFFSouthAfrica @vote_ifp @OnsBaizaNie @VFPlus @Action4SA @UDmRevolution @A_C_D_P @Rise_Mzansi

"Engineer-General" tracing back to 2019 primarily refers to the origin of a major advocacy movement by the South African engineering fraternity. In 2019, industry leaders identified a critical imbalance in South Africa's infrastructure ecosystem: the most influential professionals managing public projects were lawyers and politicians, rather than qualified engineers. Engineers, together with communities affected by poor service delivery, had to respond by developing practical and sustainable solutions. #AgendaForEngineering #Solutions iol.co.za/news/opinion/2019-…

@eThekwiniM has no shortage of engineering professionals and is arguably second only to @CityofCT in engineering capacity. The real challenge may lie in political interference, weak accountability, and decision-making that does not adequately consider technical advice. South Africa needs stronger infrastructure oversight. A Chapter 9 Engineer-General could help @ParliamentofRSA hold municipalities, politicians, and officials accountable for poor engineering decisions, wasteful expenditure, and inadequate value for money. Water should be flowing through well-maintained pipes, not being delivered on trucks. Accountability for engineering outcomes is essential if we are serious about restoring service delivery and public confidence. #EngineerGeneral #AgendaForEngineering #ServiceDelivery #Infrastructure #EngineeringLeadership

The @AuditorGen_SA has had 115 years to build an institution of accountability. The engineering profession's closest equivalent in age is SAICE, established in 1903. Yet South Africa still has no Engineer-General dedicated to overseeing engineering outcomes and infrastructure performance. @DepartmentPWI @ECSAOfficial #VoluntaryAssociations

Changing Things SA calls on political parties and independent candidates to support the engineering profession. South Africa's infrastructure crisis cannot be solved without engineers. What is required is political will, not political interference. While some engineers prefer to stay out of politics, the reality is that politics influences infrastructure, and infrastructure depends on engineers. To fix service delivery, political leaders must empower engineering professionals to do what they do best: deliver sustainable solutions for society. @MYANC @Our_DA @EFFSouthAfrica @Action4SA @vote_ifp @OnsBaizaNie @Rise_Mzansi @MkhontoweSizwex @BuildOneSA @ForGoodZA @VFPlus #WozaLGE2026 #GetupShowupVote #LGE2026 #AgendaForEngineering

Political parties speak about infrastructure and service delivery, but rarely about engineers. Yet infrastructure does not plan, design, build, operate, maintain, or manage itself. The challenges of water security, electricity reliability, economic growth, and job creation are fundamentally engineering in nature. If we are serious about service delivery, we must be serious about engineering capacity. Municipalities and public entities become dysfunctional when engineering professionals are absent from leadership and technical roles. Board Chairpersons, the majority of Board Members, CEOs, and Senior Executives of infrastructure-intensive entities such as JRA, City Power, JDA, Pikitup, and Joburg Water should be qualified engineering practitioners. Technical institutions require technical leadership. South Africa cannot build a capable state, grow its economy, create sustainable jobs, or deliver reliable services without placing engineers where critical infrastructure decisions are made. @OnsBaizaNie @Kenny_T_Kunene #AgendaForEngineering #CityEngineers #EngineeringProfessionals #Engineers #ServiceDelivery
