Observation: 'we should know what's in our food' is not coming from the market,
its coming exclusively from games industry professionals who seem to really want to say 'if they don't want to hire us, our mob will remove them from the industry'.
Because it's nothing to do with gamers,
it's to do with games industry professionals,
a righteous mob of them scanning for, targeting and trying to remove from the field those employers that the artists believe will no longer hire them because theyre AI users, right @TheMG3D?
Truth is the majority of activist artists right now are not ethically driven, they're survival driven.
When you internalise this idea that there'll be no work for you, all that's left is to try to change the industry.
It's a mistaken belief, though.
I've asked 8 people if a '100% handmade' label would be a better solution than trying to get every developer to disclose AI use.
Not a single activist has replied, I think because it's not about what's in the game - its simply about actively hurting developers that use AI.
Artists turned activists largely truly believe their career is over. Their job opportunities are over. etc.
They truly believe the people that would have employed them will now use a machine that leaves them out of the picture.
As a result they want to ruin the devs that would.
GameMaker is going free to use! I paid for a license, shipped a game, here's my honest take: For pixel perfect 2D its a fun toolbox and it'll ship to a lot of platforms,
It's roadtested. The runtime might be new but the engine + editor is ancient & archaic, you'll deal with that
It's interesting watching fellow artists navigate AI.
I saw one guy who had been fighting it tooth and nail modify his position from:
'i'll never use ai'
to
"you'd never catch me vibe coding" (but not necessarily not using ai).
And so on.
So rare to see a sprite character with proportions like this. Interesting. Really clean sprite work on Lara here...
