I attended the funeral of Chris Wickham today. He was the greatest medieval historian since Marc Bloch. He was a man of enormous kindness and generosity, without whose support I would never have had an academic job or published anything. I was not his student. He owed me nothing. My doctoral viva was pretty brutal because I was being a bit too controversial for my examiners, but he had heard of my thesis, read it, and said how much he liked it and volunteered to write for me for jobs. I am still here thanks to Chris (for good or ill).
In 1593, King Satha I of Cambodia asked Spain to send a military force from the Philippines to protect the country from invasion by the Siamese (Thailand); this request was accepted, and three ships and 120 troops, as well a donkey as a present for the King !!!, were dispatched.
"What should have been a short jaunt in their 20-foot skiff became a three-month, 3,000-plus-mile odyssey that left four…dead. He and the other survivors were rescued in the island nation of Kiribati …"

A video of Japanese conservators carefully removing papers that were recently discovered inside of a Buddhist statue dating back to the late Kamakura period (1280's-1330's).
A fascinating discovery inside a late-Kamakura-period Buddhist statue:
During the restoration of the Jūichimen Kannon 十一面観世音菩薩 at Shōjuin 正寿院 in Ujitawara, Kyoto Prefecture, conservators found 95 sheets of paper within the image. 94 of which bore stamped images of Kannon and one containing a handwritten text in ink.
The statue, approximately 60 cm tall, is the temple’s principal image and is normally kept concealed as a hibutsu 秘仏 ("secret Buddha"). In announcing the discovery, the temple described the Kannon images' function to magically protect the written document.
The contents and date of the document have yet to be established. It will be fascinating to learn what it reveals about the statue’s history and the people who placed these materials inside it.
