🇵🇱FINE GRAINED URBANISM: The most interesting and dynamic cities are undoubtedly those that offer a more fine grained urbanism. Economy of scale is of course important to keep prices down, but we must not forget to build "commercially uninteresting plots" in central locations. What I mean with the latter is of course building with smaller or odd premises that are not interesting for chain stores.🧵

Heartening stuff. @michael_diamant is performing an important public service documenting these victories for beauty, a courteous public realm & Gentle Density

This is new.
We should create places which are not as cheap as possible but as good as we can afford. The utilitarian approach to city-making is failing us. Throw-away places ith throw-away meaning are bad for us and bad for the planet. The new streets in Clamart near Paris are ....

Real architecture to replace unsightly modernism in Oxford.
Quinlan Terry has created a beautiful design which continues the Classical tradition of Oxford. It will replace an eyesore from the 80s.

Stunning luxury living
22 E Elm Street, Chicago
Built in 2016, this 5,100-square-foot white brick estate blends classic historic character with modern elegance. It features a grand multi-tiered facade, striking black ironwork, and a lit gated entrance in one of the city’s most exclusive neighborhoods.
Ihana perinne: ruotsalaiskotien ikkunoita valaisevat lamput pimeällä.

What if our public infrastructure was beautiful to the point that people not only didn't object to it, but openly wanted it because it would make places more attractive, in addition to more functional?
You are paying for this.
Plans to install a new defibrillator, public WiFi, and an emergency phone were refused.
Why?
Because of ‘visual clutter’.
The chance of survival goes down by up to 10% every minute without a defibrillator.
This is what happens when we have a system that prioritises what we can’t do, rather than what we can do.
We can’t build houses. We can’t build trains. We can’t build roads.
It’s time to change the system to focus on doing.
What would you change?
