Skipper, hard to believe something I shared could help someone I’ve learned so much from. It takes real toughness to ask for feedback that direct and be willing to hear the answers. Thank you for sharing this.
10/7 🤔’s from a ☔️morning
Reflecting on some notes in my journal from 2013 and found this priceless share from @CoachDeegan.
Coach Deegan shared with me a survey to distribute to my staff. After looking 👀 over the questions …I thought this is going to get messy. However…. what an opportunity to show them what transparency really looked like and my actions were going to establish our moving forward together. I needed their input to become the best leader I could be for the staff, the team and the organization.
Here is the quiz….
Put on your Big Boy Pants for this exercise.
Share these questions with your Asst Coaches and support group.
Please answer these questions with brutal honesty to help me grow:
1) Describe a time when I eroded your trust in me.
2) Rank(1-10)how much you believe I care about (a)you as a person and (b)your overall happiness(not just in the workplace).
3) Describe whether you’d prefer more or less feedback/direction.
4) Describe any roadblocks that are keeping you from performing at your highest level.
5) Describe how I can support you to remove or overcome these roadblocks.
6) Describe a time when you made a suggestion and believe I dismissed it without giving it the consideration it deserved.
7) Add anything else that you believe can help me be a better leader.
Collect the feedback.
Find commonalities.
Don’t defend your opinions of your coaches reflections.
Follow up either one on one conversations.
Get better.❤️🩹
Transparency breeds Trust.

I couldn’t agree with this more.
One of the best things for a coach/leader is to be coached again.
Experience falling short, not getting it.
Be humbled in front of others.
Empathy increases when we reconnect with how difficult learning can be.
Joe Mazulla says he does jiu-jitsu against superior fighters because it’s good for leaders to feel what it's like to get crushed in something
“I like stepping onto the mats. Because you could walk in one day having a good day, and I would say like 60% of the time I leave the mats, I’m crushed emotionally. Just discouraged, disheartened. But I need that.”
“I would say like 70% of the time I choose the difficult path. My professor will sometimes call me out, which I like. But if I’m not doing it there, where are you doing it?”
“When you become a coach or you become into a leadership role, it’s easy to hide. Because now you’re kind of telling other people what to do, and people may not tell you. So you need something that exposes yourself to yourself.”
“You need to feel what it’s like to be disheartened. Feel what it’s like to be discouraged. What fighting does is it gives you instant feedback. Basketball doesn’t give you instant feedback.”
“After that five-minute round, you know what you did right there. How quickly can you take that feedback and apply it to the next round?”

When it comes to human performance, nothing scales growth faster than great coaching.
But here’s the question people don’t ask: Who helps the coaches?
Who helps coaches elevate how they think, how they lead, and how they live?
The people responsible for developing everyone else deserve someone invested in their development too.

Please take a moment and read this story about the incredible work of the Bonner family and NFL QB Daniel Jones.
Mission 34 exists to eliminate the stigma surrounding mental illness through awareness, education, and ambassadors. It was founded in 2019 in honor of Sean Bonner Jr., one of our own.

Indianapolis Colts quarterback Daniel Jones lost a childhood friend to suicide and now advocates for others to ask for help.
Jones partnered with Mission 34 during the NFL’s My Cause My Cleats campaign last season. The organization’s mission is to “eliminate the stigma surrounding mental illness through awareness, education and ambassadors,” and the No. 34 represents Sean Jr. — Jones' late childhood friend — through his baseball jersey number.

Enjoy and try to dominate the level you’re on.
Middle school parents are talking scholarships. High school players are worried about going pro.
We can’t let the pursuit of what’s next steal the joy of right now.
Jalen Brunson says 30 intentional minutes can beat 2 hours in the gym, and explains the NBA was never his goal because he was consumed with just trying to get a little bit better everyday
“People say, ‘Oh, I was in the gym for two hours today.’ Like, okay, what did you do in the gym?’ You can get a much more difficult and better workout in 30 to 40 minutes versus just being in the gym BS’ing for two hours.”
“While it was about consistency, it was about being precise. There was intent to everything you did. It was definitely commitment. I loved going out and working out. I loved going and playing pickup.”
“When we lived in Virginia, we lived in Charlottesville Virginia when my dad worked at UVA. I would go play at the rec center with college kids. We would play pickup, I’m playing against older people and I’m playing well. I’m not thinking, I’m going to the NBA. The NBA was never talked about. No. I’m just trying to get better. It was all about going to college.”
“There were baby steps. Yes there were long term goals, but I’m focused on the short term goals. Baby steps, one step at a time. People just want to jump straight there, and they get disappointed because they didn’t enjoy their journey. I enjoyed every step of my journey. Enjoy your steps.”

Thank you for everything over the years. We tell our players to “run their own race.” The most important legs of my race are with my family and my teaching. I need to “win” those races.

After losing 85 innings from the previous season, Denison relied on all 20 pitchers on its staff to post a 3.14 team ERA, finish the season 51-3, and win the program's first ever National Championship.

7/30 🤔’s on a rainy ☔️ morning
Going through my 2019 journal and I reread an entry I write after I was fired. My good friend Mike Deegan shared this with me….
@CoachDeegan
Final Thoughts:
The discussion of being fired comes with a scarlet letter. I believe many people suffer in silence thinking they are the only ones going through difficult patches. No one is going to post on Facebook, “Met with my boss today. I have this Quarter to improve or I’m done.” We think we are alone and that just isn’t the case.
The world needs strong leaders who have standards and values. If we have the courage to lead issues will develop. I’ve made a choice that I am going to be true to myself as a leader. That means accusations and confrontation will likely follow. Unfortunately, this may put me and my family in tough situations. I’ll focus on the next play and respond in a positive manner. I refuse to live in fear and I am not willing to comprise my standards.
Make it a great week,
Mike
P.S. Please consider sharing this article. My guess is someone in your life may be going through a tough time professionally. They need to know they are not alone.
