If you are a pitcher(Any level), a pitching coach or head coach or manager at any level, this is a MUST read. It was generated by Fred Corral who now works in development for 108 PERFORMANCE in Knoxville.
LETTER FROM “THE GAME”
A Message to the Pitcher
Allow me to introduce myself.
I’ve been around your clubhouse, your bullpen, your dugout—and most of all, your head—for a long time.
I am The Game.
I’ve seen better arms than yours.
Harder throwers. Better stuff. More talent. More opportunity.
And I’ve beaten plenty of them.
Not because they weren’t good enough.
Because eventually, I convinced them to stop doing what made them good.
That’s how I work.
I rarely beat you all at once.
I beat you one decision at a time.
I get you to stop preparing.
I get you thinking about results instead of execution.
I get you worried about velocity, mechanics, the umpire, the defense, your role, your ERA, who’s watching and what happens next.
Anything that takes you away from this pitch works for me.
Because I know something about pitching that sometimes you forget:
You are at your best when you attack.
So I try to make you defensive.
You call it being careful.
I call it winning.
I LOVE FEAR
I love when you fear contact.
When you forget that most balls put in play become outs.
When you start trying to avoid barrels instead of creating outs.
When you nibble.
When you guide.
When you hope.
When you try to make the perfect pitch.
That’s when the hitter becomes the House.
And I have you.
The great ones understand:
FAH: Fearlessly Attack Hitters.
Not recklessly.
Fearlessly.
Know your weapons.
Know the hitter.
Know where damage lives.
Know where chase lives.
Then make your pitch with conviction.
Be the House.
Establish the terms.
I LOVE 1–0
Want to know one of my favorite counts?
1–0.
Because the only path to 0–2 runs through 0–1.
So I whisper:
Be careful.
Feel your way into the at-bat.
Don’t give him anything too good.
Then you’re 1–0.
Then 2–0.
And suddenly you’re throwing what he wants instead of what you want.
That’s why I hate pitchers who understand the value of 0–0.
Win the first pitch.
Win the Race to Two Strikes.
Understand the 1–1 hinge.
Earn leverage.
Then use it.
On or off in three. Put away in four.
I LOVE INFORMATION, ESPECIALLY WHEN YOU DON’T KNOW WHAT TO DO WITH IT
This is one of my newer tricks.
I give you numbers.
Velocity.
IVB.
HB.
VAA.
Whiff rates.
Chase rates.
Heat maps.
Count tendencies.
Pitch usage.
Matchups.
More information than pitchers have ever possessed.
And information is powerful.
The man with the most information at the end wins—not the man with the most toys.
But here’s how I turn your information against you:
I get you to keep analyzing when it’s time to compete.
I get you thinking about seven possibilities instead of committing to one.
I get you chasing somebody else’s movement profile instead of understanding your own.
I get you staring at the iPad instead of seeing the hitter.
I turn preparation into hesitation.
Paralysis by analysis.
That’s when your greatest advantage becomes mine.
Study everything.
Learn everything.
Know your arsenal.
Know the hitter.
Understand movement, damage, chase, counts and tendencies.
Gather information until it creates clarity.
Then when you step on the mound:
simplify.
The information has already done its job.
Now trust it.
See the target.
Make a decision.
Commit.
Pitch.
The smartest pitcher isn’t the one thinking about the most things when the ball leaves his hand.
It’s the one who used the most information to arrive at the clearest decision.
I LOVE WHEN YOU FORGET WHAT PITCHING IS
Hitters are trying to create timing.
Your job is to disrupt it.
Pitching isn’t owning a collection of pitches.
It’s making pitches work together.
Front to back.
Up and down.
In and out.
Hard and soft.
Run and cut.
Carry and drop.
You aren’t simply moving the baseball.

Jose Ramirez was asked why he was laughing while rounding 3rd:
J-Ram said he knew a changeup was coming and Adell could rollover to the left side of the infield.
So, he tried to steal 3rd hoping to pull Caminero and Walls to the bases and open up a hole in the infield 🤯

I asked an MLB player what he wishes he knew earlier about hitting.
“Feel-good BP is backwards. You’re wanting to feel good when it doesn’t matter and you have a false sense of 'being ready'"
"Get your routine in. Then challenge yourself in the box every single day."
"Nobody’s ever gotten a hit that counts in a cage."
"All those barrels off a 47 mph fastball stay there. What comes with you is how you trained your eyes, your decisions, and your path at game speed.”

Excited to have another dude of this caliber talent & character here.

Tom Brady says his career turned around when a sports psychologist told him to stop complaining about what he wasn’t getting and start stewarding what he had the right way
“Greg said to me, ‘Why don’t you quit bitching about all the things you’re not getting, and how about you do the best with whatever opportunities you get?’, ‘Stop worrying about what the other quarterback’s getting. Stop worrying about what the coach is saying to you.’”
“‘Every time you get in there, you bring the juice. You bring the energy. You bring the enthusiasm. You treat practice like a game.’ Because if you just decide to go out there and you’re blaming everybody else, where does that get you? So I started to change my attitude.”
“I didn’t have a lot of confidence in myself. And when you don’t have a lot of confidence in yourself, you blame other people. When you gain confidence in yourself, you start pointing the finger at yourself.”
“I would encourage every athlete to look in the mirror after every day of practice or a game and say, ‘What can I do better to help the team? What can I do better?’”
“Not, ‘What does the coach need to do better?’ Not, ‘What do my teammates need to do better?’, ‘What do I need to do better?’ If every player does that, you’re going to have an incredible team.”
“You can’t have a false confidence. You don’t only gain your confidence because of your physical ability. You gain your confidence because you’re prepared, because you’re competitive. I couldn’t just show up and be better than everybody.”
“I had to show up prepared. I had to show up with energy. I had to show up with my body feeling right. I had to show up like I was on a mission.”

Luke Falk shared a Mike Leach story that stopped me cold:
Two kids. One rich. One poor.
Every training camp, Coach Leach told his team about these 2 kids.
The rich kid has two choices.
Get soft. Get entitled. Expect everything handed to him because he was handed more.
Or take the resources, the coaching, the opportunities, and compound them into something greater.
The poor kid has two choices too.
Say nobody gave him anything. Blame the world. Make his circumstances the reason he never became what he could have been.
Or outwork everyone in the room.
Luke said the locker room had both. Kids from wealth. Kids from nothing. Kids with every advantage. Kids who scraped for every inch.
Same choice for all of them.
Ownership or victimhood.
Fuel or excuse.
The rich kid can waste the head start or build on it.
The poor kid can drown in the deficit or weaponize it.
Greatness doesn't come from where you start.
It comes from which kid you choose to feed.

How should undersized pitchers approach training for velocity?🤔
We've coached hundreds of pitchers under 5'11" throwing 92+ mph, and we ran the numbers on what makes them different from their less vertically challenged counterparts.
Mass? Momentum? Rotational velocities? Sequencing? Impulse? Ground force?
A 45-minute deep dive that lays the groundwork for how to approach the process.

Someone walked into Don Baylor's office to tell him he was on the hot seat. I was sitting right there.
I was his hitting coach in Colorado, during one of the roughest stretches of our season. We were going over the lineup when it happened.
Don looked up and said, "The only time my seat's been hot is when I've let it be hot. My focus is to do my job, not worry about my job."
I never forgot that.
Years later, I heard almost the same words from Bobby Cox. Then again from Joe Torre. Different clubhouses, three Hall of Fame-caliber baseball minds, the same lesson.
Worrying about losing a job doesn't make you better at keeping it. It just splits your attention between the work in front of you and an outcome you can't control.
I've been let go three times in this game.
Every time, the work I'd already put in was still real. It just wasn't up to me whether it was enough to stay.
So I stopped trying to manage the outcome and just started managing the day.
Show up, do the job that's in front of you, and let the rest take care of itself.
Do the job. Don't worry about the job.
@Rockies
The best players are the ones who care the most. If you truly care, you'll do the little things to make you successful.
I’m convinced a lot of baseball players show up to events because Mom and Dad want them there—not because they want to be there.
How do I know? Their CARE LEVEL gives them away.
I’ve seen too many players this summer:
Shirts untucked on the field while event is going on.
Walking on, off, and around the field.
Third basemen making no effort to block an off-target throw from the outfield.
Players completely checked out between reps—talking about last night, their plans afterward, or anything except what’s happening on the field.
None of these things require talent - They require pride. Awareness. Intentionality.
Coaches and evaluators don’t grade your intentions - they grade what they can observe.
Your CARE LEVEL tells us whether baseball matters to you—or only to your parents.
