My little tool just got featured in a @Coding_with_Jan video 🤯

When I started learning Shopify development, I was watching Jan’s videos. Now something I built is featured in one of them. Honestly, this feels like a life goal achieved.
I joined his AI Developer Bootcamp community in April, and it’s genuinely the best community I could have imagined.
It feels like I’m learning faster, building more, and achieving 10x as much in the same amount of time.

My two boys love LEGO and are always browsing for the next sets on their wishlist.
As a good dad and Shopify developer, that felt like the perfect excuse to explore the Shopify UCP Catalog API.
So I built Brickfinder:

my Shopify app journey:
1. turn 17 and start Shopify dropshipping store
2. go to college for comp sci, drop out after a year to learn to code on my own
3. need some way to make money, remember Shopify apps from dropshipping days
4. watch @Coding_with_Jan interview with @DsMatie
4.1. Find out that Shopify apps do $1B revenue per year??
5. Fork Shopify app Remix template and just figure it out (started from basically zero, comp sci wasn't helpful)
6. Try to make an auto blog formatting app (6 months), no one knew what it did
7. Almost ran out of money, sold dropshipping store for runway (3 years after starting it)
8. Try to make WYSIWYG blog editor app, failed bc spaghetti code was too buggy (6 months)
9. Start Affilitrak, publish MVP and develop in prod
10. Get BFS, make app free, many people install
11. Provide good support, people leave reviews
12. Finally add paid plan 1 year and 3 months after starting
13. MRR grows but slowly, working on it
It's been 2.5 years since I dropped out to work on Shopify apps. I'm happy with how it's gone, I don't think I would do anything differently.
here's how i got into building Shopify apps:
1. heard @DsMatie on the indiehackers podcast
2. tried to build my first app. got nowhere
3. procrastinated. built features nobody asked for
4. @charlesmdp dropped a list of shopify app ideas. i built the simplest one
5. published it. got my first paying customers
6. ok. now something clicked lol
7. built Function Studio. my own idea this time. and people actually like it :)
huge thanks to Mat and Charles for sharing their journeys and helping me start mine. appreciate you guys!
