π How to win more close games:
Coaches make 2 big mistakes.
1. They don't talk through strategic in-game adjustments.
2. They don't develop a philosophy to help guide their decision-making.
Try this instead...
β’ The Opening Move: Think of the game's start like a chess opening. Do you want to open up with high pressure? A trap? Plan your initial moves to exploit your strengths against the opponent's weaknesses. Your opening sets the tone and forces the opposition to adapt.
β’ Counters Ready: Anticipate your opponent's moves and have your counters prepared. A well-thought-out plan for countering opposing strategies can keep your team one step ahead. Think about counters before they happen.
β’ Endgame Excellence: Focus on endgame scenarios. Whether leading or trailing, your strategy in the final moments can be the difference between victory and defeat. Practice scenarios where you have fouls to give or need to manage the clock effectively.
β’ Foul Game Flexibility: Adjust your play based on the referees' calls. If the refs are letting a lot go, play more aggressively on defense. If they're calling a lot, encourage your players to be smart. Whether the game is called tight or loose, adapt to the situation.
β’ Offensive Rebounds: If you're not getting hurt in transition, you want to attack the glass much harder. If you are getting hurt in transition, you probably want to attack the glass more thoughtfully. Be strategic in when and how you attack the glass.
β’ Pace Control: Pace is how fast you get up and down the court. Manage the pace to your advantage. If you're trailing, increase the pace early to close the gap. Adjust your strategy based on the opponent's game plan to maintain control.
β’ Matchup Mastery: Prioritize defensive matchups to neutralize key opponents. If someone's hurting you, put your best defender on them before you switch up your entire defense.
β’ Embrace Variance: If you're the underdog, increase the game's variance. Take more risks, such as shooting more threes or applying aggressive defense, to level the playing field. Keep them guessing.
β’ Strategic Actions: Introduce unique plays that highlight your strengths and exploit the opponent's weaknesses. This is where your advantage lies.
β’ Ball Screen Defense Diversification: Vary your approach to defending ball screens. Switch it up. Keeping the opponent guessing on how you'll defend their best players can limit their effectiveness.
1. Plan your opening.
2. Anticipate counters.
3. Practice endgame scenarios (winning and losing).
4. Adjust your play based off referee's foul calls.
5. Attack the glass strategically.
6. Control the pace how you want to.
7. Limit their team's best offensive players
8. Keep them guessing.
9. Introduce a new play.
10. Diversify your ball screen defense.
The Big Takeaway: The key to late-season success is preparation. Great teams and players aren't caught off guard. Stay Prepared.

Deconstruct your offensive concepts to its barest bones.
Write out every coverage or shot you could get and have fun putting your layered drills together.
I literally come up with these layered segments the day of, just freestyling on my whiteboard. It doesnt always have to make sense either. Half the time what happens on the court in a game doesnt make sense. It just happens

You don't need the tallest players to win high school basketball games.
You need:
- Guards who defend like their future depends on it,
- A big who fights for every rebound,
- And a team that would rather make a great pass than take a *good* shot.
Effort always wins.

Motion Shooting: This is a build up from one of our spring workouts. These are not static or random actions. These are actions from our offensive schemes. We want to have a healthy tension between discipline and creativity/reads. We are working on this balance all the time. #DoTheWork #GrowOurGame.
