Today in Saco, I joined local leaders, residents, and the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers to mark the start of construction on the Camp Ellis Shore Damage Mitigation Project. For generations, severe erosion at Camp Ellis has taken a devastating toll. 38 homes have washed into the sea, the shoreline has receded by approximately 400 feet, and roads have been lost.
As Chair of the Senate Appropriations Committee, I worked hard to secure $750,000 for this design of this project and $23 million to support construction of a new spur jetty and sand replenishment at Camp Ellis. By reducing wave energy generated by the existing north jetty and limiting the loss of sediment from the shoreline, this project will help protect property and restore the beachfront.
Thank you to the people of Saco, @CorpsNewEngland, and my delegation colleagues for your partnership in helping make this long-sought solution a reality.

Today we celebrate our 251st birthday! George Washington appointed the first engineer officers of the Army on June 16, 1775, during the American Revolution, and engineers have served in combat in all subsequent American wars. #USACE251

A life jacket can’t save your life if it’s floating on top of the water and you’re sinking to the bottom. Having a life jacket on your boat, even if it’s “readily accessible,” is not good enough. Please Wear It so you can enjoy boating another day.
Lifejacket worn, nobody mourns. Hunter set out for a day of hunting at a USACE New England District recreation park. While listing the items he has brough for the day, he remembers that he packed his lifejacket.
Fishing is a lot of fun even when a big fish gets away. Please play it safe and always wear a life jacket when fishing from a kayak, boat, the shore, or a dock. @pleasewearit
