Cruise ships at dock cost residents and communities from harm to health from air pollution. Ports put $ value on that harm to justify shore power, but don't own up to the harm lacking shore power. #CruiseShipsKill
The 2010 Port Authority testimony to the Public Services Commission supporting the creation of a shore power tariff (electricity rate for ships), stating that the use of shore power at the Brooklyn Cruise Terminal would save residents $9M per year in monetized health care costs!

Well done California!
🎉Big win for portside communities today w/ @EPA's authorization for @AirResources At-Berth Rule! Ships will need to plug into shorepower at CA ports & reduce cancer-causing pollution. These emission reductions will save 230 lives! #PollutionFreePorts

Like prisons and nursing homes, cruise ships have a lot of people in close contact with each other for extended periods of time, making ideal conditions for both contact and airborne transmission of disease. And then spreading it onto communities.
The @CDCgov revealed that 73 (66 passengers & 7 crew members) on @VirginVoyages Scarlet Lady reported being ill during the #cruise that ended in Miami on Friday, with complaints of abdominal cramps, vomiting & diarrhea. cruiselawnews.com/2023/10/ar… The CDC has not determined the “causative agent” for this most recent outbreak. Norovirus is listed as the causative agent in all other 13 cruise ship outbreaks this year. Norovirus is the usual cause of gastrointestinal illnesses on cruise ships and is commonly the cause of outbreaks in nursing homes, hospitals and daycare facilities. According to the CDC and FDA, the most likely cause for cruise ship GI outbreaks is contaminated water or food.

Op-Ed: Santa Barbara City Council Turns Blind Eye to Cruise Ship #Pollution edhat.com/news/op-ed-city-co… "Anti-cruise ship protests in port cities are growing! Even residents of cities that depend heavily on tourism are concerned about the hazards that #cruise ships bring with them. Here are some of them:  Bar Harbor, Maine; Juneau, Alaska;  Amsterdam, Barcelona, Italy, France and Norway. These cities and countries, along with scientists, realize that cruise ships bring environmental pollution and and an increase in health hazards to the cities that they visit.  Cruise ships burn bunker oil, the most polluting fossil fuel of all and the most dangerous to lungs and hearts, increasing the risks of asthma, lung disease and cancer . . . They continue to spew poison while their engines idle during their visits. Are the local environment and the health of the people that you are sworn to protect and serve of no concern to you? Cruise ships burn the most lethal fuel of any other fossil fuel: Bunker Oil. It is the dirtiest fuel of them all!" #CruiseNews

A start. Moving the problem conveys ships are not welcome; however, the problems remain. Air pollution travels long distances, as can cruise passengers on buses (and planes into Barcelona). #ChooseNottoCruise #CruiseShipsKill #ClimateEmergency

One example, one ship, one port call - $33,991* Cardiovascular, respiratory, neurological, cancer damage delivered to your residents. Day after day. City after city. Ship upon ship. #CruiseShipsKill *Doesn't include arrival/docking/departure pollution, just at the dock.

Exactly. Shore power is largely a marketing suggestion that has no relevance to the pollution being emitted and harming people today in communities where cruise ships call around the world.

Thanks @CLIAGlobal for documenting that of 1,200 ports where cruise ships call, 34 (under 3%) have active shore power, 24 (2%) have work funded. Zero private cruise destinations have shore power, despite intensive visitation. Not a significant climate solution. #ClimateCrisis
⚡ Plugging in to reduce air emissions at berth ⚡ 🌐 Today there are 32 ports globally offering at least one cruise berth with shoreside electricity plug-in capability, with this number anticipated to rise with planned and funded projects in the works. 🛳️ #WeAreCruise

#COP28 #ClimateChange is about consumption of very richest people in our global society. 50% of global emissions are emitted by just 10% of the population. 90% of global emissions by 50% of the population. We need climate justice to save our planet. The rich need to step up

In passing the Cruise Vessel Security and Safety Act of 2010 (CVSSA), Congress found that “serious incidents, including sexual assault and the disappearance of passengers at sea, have occurred on cruise vessel voyages,” and that “passengers lack adequate understanding of their vulnerability to crime on board cruise vessels . . . “ transportation.gov/mission/s… The CVSSA mandates that reports of shipboard criminal activity be reported to the @FBI. In turn, the @USDOJ must disclose the crimes to the public in quarterly reports (see below). Yet, the DOJ has not disclosed a single shipboard crimes this year (2023)! The last crime reported was in 2022 for the period Dec. 1st to Dec. 31st. #Cruise lines, which have a higher per capita sexual assault rate than businesses ashore, & @CLIAGlobal, which fought against the CVSSA legislation, love keeping crime statistics secret and the public in the dark. When will the U.S. travelling public finally earn of the crimes which have occured on cruise ships this year?

#Cruise executives, and an occasional cruise ship engineer following the company's talking points, will try to convince you not to worry about "white smoke." Its just harmless "water vapor" they'll say. But don't be fooled. cruiselawnews.com/2019/09/ar…

#CruiseShipsKill #corals - through dredging to accommodate huge ships and turbidity from ships traveling in shallow waters. New evidence of harm from sediments to Atlantic corals.
Further evidence that excess turbidity and sediment plumes can be lethal to corals, including Orbicella faveolata, for which the FL Keys are proposed critical habitat.

In October 2020, GCAN reached out by mail to the boards of directors and executives of Carnival Corp, NCLH, RCCL, MSC, Disney and executives of subsidiary cruise lines with our Principles of Responsible Cruise Tourism, inviting discussion. An MSC PR person was the sole response.
It is time to work with the #cruise industry to address issues such as #pollution as the Industy is here to stay and only growing. Let’s encourage better #practices

#cruiseship lines make lots of PR about their ships being shore power ready. But either they are choosing to not make the connections, or the power is not available, even at the relatively few docks globally where there is shore power for cruise ships. #ShorePower #Greenwashing
Also, EDC states QM2 is using shore power 70% of the time. It didn’t use it on 7/7/2023 when the Dutch news network @RTLnieuws did the story about ships not using shore power in Brooklyn. Coincidence?
