The Priest-King statue was not lost during Partition.
For 25 years after 1947, it remained on display at the National Museum in New Delhi.
It was only in 1972, under the Shimla Agreement between Indira Gandhi and Zulfikar Bhutto, that the sculpture was transferred to Pakistan.
The Partition resulted in the physical and psychological separation of this iconic artefact from India. While both India and Pakistan share the heritage of the Indus Valley Civilisation, the idol's location in Pakistan has made it a symbol of Pakistani national heritage.
