I know delayed and cancelled travel is frustrating, but rail companies not acting accordingly due to weather like this lead to the deaths of 3 people in 2020
Hello, any reason why trains to Manchester are cancelled? The weather is not a good excuse @northernassist

The desire for new railway station and railway lines is phenomenal. Every single one reopened has seen numbers using them being far in excess of forecasts. Incidentally passenger railways now carry 1.83 billion journeys a year - that’s the highest since 1920! Under British Rail it was a 1/3 of that. Was driven by passenger franchising needing to chase growth.

This is, I think, the third time that a new railway station’s patronage has been double the predicted volume. Transport analysts: does this mean the current predictive model is broken? And wouldn’t that shift up the business case for other dismissed reopenings / new stations…?

♦️WHITE PRIVILEGE♦️ This is how our cotton mills and wool mills made their profits, which afforded them their fine stone-built mansions on the outskirts of mill towns. It was dangerous work, fingers were often lost, eye injuries common, no comfort breaks, no health insurance and no factory nurse. This work was done on empty bellies after a walk to work. Malnutrition was common place and discipline hard. A water barrel with a wooden ladle for dry dusty days as cotton dander filled the choking air. There were no holidays to look forward to, no sick pay, and kids as young as 7 sent to work in the miserable conditions their parents stomached for a lifetime. They didn't play much, they were too knackered for that. A cold hard bed was all they could hope for. Arthritis and joint pains kicked in early as crippled fingers in their middle years struggled with looms. And our MPs talk about reparations for slavery, when every God damned nation was using slaves. White privilege... you disgust me. There should be a plaque of remembrance dedicated to the entire working class! #DawnButlerMP

It was a Westminster press briefing called at 72 hours' notice ahead of the Budget, not an arena rally booked six months in advance. The room was packed out with political journalists, broadcast cameras, and economic correspondents. Instead of interrogating a detailed 64-point plan to slash £40bn of Whitehall waste and restore British growth, Sky’s top takeaway is schoolyard seating-plan gossip. This is why trust in legacy broadcast media is in freefall. Britain is facing £3 trillion in national debt, public services are buckling, and the lobby pack behaves like a clutch of lifestyle bloggers.
The Reform UK conference hall today is awkwardly empty - both sides of the stage barely filled and behind the stage a few seats are still unfilled even on the front row Nigel Farage blames ‘staff incompetence’ for the turnout - signs of not an altogether happy party

The German ownership of the @Telegraph is seeking to make it more pro EU and less conservative (small c). Disastrous. Will kill a great paper.

A little too much (thank you @GuidoFawkes) is being read into my quote welcoming this @Prosperity_Inst report prosperity.com/media-publica…. I don't endorse the report's precise prescriptions on behalf of @reformparty_uk. The size and shape of the Armed Forces is downstream of the national security policy work we are doing - more on that soon. But I do welcome the report's clear-eyed focus on our core national interests, and its recognition that the refusal to invest properly or make decisions about priorities has created our 'overstretched and hollow Armed Forces'. I am more sceptical about 'single service' strategies ('more Navy', 'more Army' etc). We should be procuring capability rather than platforms, with much more scope for spiral development and constant upgrading as technology changes. And most of all we need a trajectory of immediate and sustained public spending increases, with clear demand signals to attract the private capital that will create the defence innovations of the future - innovations Britain is brilliant at, but currently can't create at the scale and pace that we need.

🔴Picking up some unhappiness from Labour MPs about Andy Burnham's words on freedom of movement at last night's PLP with Lucy Powell I'm told the education secretary was pressed on why the argument was being rehashed given how divisive it was for parliament during the referendum and in subsequent years. I understand she told MPs that debates around Brexit needed to be handled sensitively - and that she "remembers the days" of Brexit division One MP tells me: "She held the line but seemed as bemused as anyone."

Meanwhile, Reform is not talking of silly plans to rejoin the EU but important measures to improve the economy. A great list of 65 measures.

😂 Nick Ferrari bursts out laughing as Business Secretary Jonathan Reynolds is forced to sell the latest government gimmick live on @LBC Reynolds looked thoroughly embarrassed as he tried to sell the plan to scrap import tariffs on a list of “everyday essentials”. When Ferrari asked him which products were included and what the actual savings would be, Reynolds immediately started dampening expectations, sheepishly admitting these were “not huge reductions” before reeling off the list: baked beans, chocolate, gherkins… That’s as far as he got. Ferrari could not contain himself and burst out laughing. 😭 Nick then pointed out that the Conservatives have called the projected saving of £21 per year “derisory”. You could see Reynolds was mortified reading it out. Imagine the brief he opened this morning and realised he had to go on air and sell this to the public. 😬 What a farce. Even on the government’s own figures, this works out at roughly 40p a week for the average household. Forty pence a week. You lucky people. Another pointless gimmick that will have zero material impact on people’s lives.

🇫🇷 🇬🇧The V1 was heading toward a hospital. The Free French pilot chasing it was eight days away from his wedding. On August 3, 1944, Jean Maridor intercepted a German flying bomb threatening Benenden Hospital in Kent. The 23-year-old Free French ace flew Spitfires with No. 91 Squadron of the RAF. Credited with five aerial victories, he had also become a skilled V1 hunter. His final interception would bring his tally to seven flying bombs destroyed individually. Four years earlier, he had escaped France to keep fighting. Shooting down a V1 carried a deadly risk: get too close, and its exploding warhead could destroy the fighter pursuing it. There was another way. A pilot could slide his wingtip beneath the V1’s wing, disturbing the airflow and tipping the flying bomb off balance, without necessarily touching it. According to the Le Havre municipal archives, Maridor tried to tip the "doodlebug" but could not bring it down. With the hospital threatened, he turned to his cannons. He closed to less than 50 meters and fired. The V1 exploded. The blast destroyed his Spitfire. France’s Order of Liberation records his final attack as a deliberate sacrifice to save the hospital. Before the war, Maridor worked as a barber while learning to fly and studying to qualify for military pilot training. He earned his first pilot’s certificate at sixteen. Eight days after his final mission, he was due to marry his fiancée, Jean Lambourn, a serving officer in the Women’s Auxiliary Air Force. He was twenty-three. They never had their wedding. Remember Jean Maridor. Follow @Vanguard_WW2 for more stories worth remembering.
