everything that Anne Carson has written is risky & original in some (unpredictable) way. truly an unclassifiable imagination-- poet, translator, essayist, philosopher, observer of the vicissitudes of life; we'd met just once decades ago at Princeton where Anne Carson was an instructor in the Classics Dept. & I was--hypothetically--just a "visitor" for one year in Creative Writing. not predictable that Anne would move on, & on, & on to numerous universities & I would remain at Princeton; now hoping that she is in Canada & not caught up in toxic US politics so antithetical to the humanism & freedom of the imagination required for the soul to breathe.

We've been brainwashed to believe fiction can never be relevant, when in fact it's the best way to examine an issue-- such as the Cornell rape case-- exemplified by a 1993(!) Mary Gaitskill short story. Time to remove literature from its lock box.
I'm still shocked that apparently no one, not even our esteemed literary intellectuals, has read Mary Gaitskill's short story "The Girl On a Plane." It's an illustration of how art goes deeper than mere reportage. Also, enlightening commentary on the current Cornell U rape case.

I just got out of Digger and anyone who doesn’t like it is just not literate enough to get it, or complicit in the systems that it’s critiquing. Americans do not understand class critique, imperialist critique, or Brechtian theatre. They do not understand art that engages it.

‘DIGGER’ has opened with $8M domestically on a projected budget of $160M-$180M. Biggest Hollywood box office bomb of 2026 & one of the biggest bombs of all time.

Currently doing Berger’s Ways of Seeing with my high school poetry students. It’s so exciting to them, and they talk about being consumed by Instagram and TikTok. I think teens need Berger desperately right now. We need a Ways of Seeing that addresses accelerationist aesthetics.

I'm back in @PoetryFound with a longread about what "a writer's life" looks like, based on 20+ books with "a writer's life" (or similar) as title or subtitle. This was initially an Oxford lecture in 2024; I'm delighted to see it published! Read for free: poetryfoundation.org/article…

Happy Birthday to Randy Bachman, born in Winnipeg, Manitoba 🇨🇦 83 years ago today. He is a guitarist, singer and founding member of the Guess Who and Bachman-Turner Overdrive. It’s a shame that he hasn’t been inducted into the RRHOF as a member of either band. Favourite songs?

The point of learning to rock out was always simply developing the ability to entertain yourself (myself)...and not be a negative influence on anyone in any way whatsoever (except my dad, maybe)

I've been reading actual paper books to fight brain rot This summer I read Sinclair Lewis’s “It Can’t Happen Here” The presidential candidate promises every American $5,000 a year, wins the election, then becomes a dictator. It was published in 1935! Same stuff, different dictators!

In Iowa I am sorry to say we poets regarded the fiction writers as kind of sell-out jocks and dumb beasts. Now that I am trying to write a novel I am realizing they were actually mystical geniuses
