There was a chap at Oxford who came up in the 80s to research the 4 year tenure of a Yorkshire bishop. He spent 40 years on it, draining an inheritance left on condition it was spent on his education. Daily Mass (sometimes several times a day), lobster every day at Brown's next to the Oratory (hence the gout), magnificent dinner parties for miscreants, oddballs and grad students, and generous to charity. His fingers were so fat that his signet rings appeared stuck to them. Having spent every last penny, he was evicted from his apartment and became a monk some 3 years ago. No wife, no kids, and I don't think the DPhil ever got finished.
Top 5 most eccentric human beings I’ve met in my life. Bless him.

It’s not just the impact the format has on the content, and, subsequently, how on we imbibe information and experience entertainment, but yes on attention spans, but this isn’t just about the effects on education or average cognitive ability (or cognitive development in kids).
The erosion of people’s capacity for sustained concentration has much wider effects: on any serious social and cultural commentary, yes, but also less appreciated on moral judgment, forming social bonds, empathy. I’ve met people who seem incapable of starting or maintaining romantic relationships and it took me a long time to realise that they don’t have the necessary attention, expect instant gratification, and become extremely shallow in their tastes and judgment without realising.
Relatedly, I’ve also met three senior London journalists who have all said, almost in passing: ‘Oh, I can’t watch movies, at all, ever. I only do it with the FF button on 2.0x.’ A bit alarming imo.

Thinking about the time I was bored during covid and applied to the Berklee school of music as a jazz player under the name Banjo Kazooie and got a response from an admissions officer who seemed like he was in pretty good spirits about it

We live in the times of everything chicken
Eat meat? Get chicken
Eat fish? Get chicken-fed fish
Everyone is eating so much chicken that byproducts of chicken have become super cheap

~10% of lev loans have cash flows less than their interest expense.
Many of them are '21-'22 LBOs, done at peak multiples. Meanwhile, the market went from pricing ~60bps of cuts to start the year to getting a hike.
Yikes.
