Advice for grads (via @baumlab 🤩) Treat your time as the precious commodity that it is Figure out what the ‘big rocks’ are in your life Recognize the opportunity cost of each commitment Develop good work habits Write regularly Invest in your own professional development ✨
10 yrs ago when I was a new grad student, @baumlab gave the plenary talk at the SFU-UVic-UBC EcoEvo retreat & I took a photo of this slide because it seemed important & very useful. Yesterday at the @UofGCBS grad symposium, I recycled this because it's evergreen good advice 🌲✨

A living wage in #Guelph is > $30,000/ year. NSERC scholarships pay well below that, which is not enough to pay for food, housing and other basic needs. #SupportOurScience @UofGGC ontariolivingwage.ca/rates
#SupportOurScience is calling for a nation-wide walk out in support of increased funding for #GradStudents & #Postdocs! We will be joining the walkout at the University of Guelph on May 1st at 1pm. More specific details will come, but for now please share broadly!

A fun project highlighting the role restaurants may have in homogenizing urban bird communities. TL;DR in the Phoenix Metropolitan Area, if there are restaurants nearby, you will almost find pigeons, regardless of other elements of urbanization journals.plos.org/plosone/ar… @caplter

Evolution is a key part of coral survival in the warming ocean, and local conservation can make the difference if paired with global climate mitigation. We argue in a new @NatureEcoEvo paper: rdcu.be/cVJra (full text link)

The internet seems full of consumerist, superficial values. These anti-sustainability values are baked into media & social media platforms. It’s time to do something about it. This THREAD introduces our @cosphereproject effort to #UnleashValues aligned with sustainability.
