Dubai's ambition to become a global centre for gold trading began more than 24 years ago. Today, technology is opening the next chapter of that ambition.
On 24 April 2002, His Highness Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum announced the creation of the Dubai Metals and Commodities Centre, with the ambition of capturing half of the international gold business.
At the time, Dubai held approximately 10% of the market.
Today, the UAE is the world's second-largest physical gold trading hub, after Switzerland. DMCC has played a central role in this growth, building the physical trading infrastructure that now supports digital innovation, asset tokenisation, and new models of commodity ownership.
That evolution is already underway. DMCC Tradeflow provides commodity ownership records that support financing and tokenised products, and our partnership with @varadubai, established in October 2025, created a framework for tokenising gold, diamonds, and other commodities. In September 2026, the world's largest silver bar, weighing 1,971 kg, became the first tokenised commodity asset launched under the DMCC-VARA framework. The physical bar is registered and verified through Tradeflow and held securely by @Brinks, while @Tokinvest_Cap, a VARA-regulated platform, issues fractional digital interests to eligible investors.
On 8 October 2026, His Highness Sheikh Maktoum bin Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, First Deputy Ruler of Dubai, Deputy Prime Minister, Minister of Finance and Chairman of the Higher Committee for the Development of the Economic and Financial Sector, chaired a meeting reviewing six strategic directions for the Dubai Gold Strategy, spanning trading, financing, storage, competitiveness, price discovery, and jewellery and retail demand. The strategy covers the gold value chain through to digital tokenisation, and builds directly on the vision established in 2002.
DMCC Tech is home to more than 4,000 technology companies, including our @dmcccrypto, @dmccaicentre, and @DMCC_Gaming Centres and @DMCC_Cyber, alongside our emerging quantum ecosystem. It brings technology innovators closer to the traders, refiners, custodians, and financial institutions that can put their solutions to work.
Dubai's foreign gold trade reached about AED 1 trillion in 2025, up 60% on the previous year. Our focus is on practical applications of AI, blockchain, cybersecurity, and emerging technologies: stronger traceability, secure digital ownership, more efficient financing, and trusted connections between physical commodities and digital markets.
Join us at the 7th Dubai Diamond Conference, 25 to 27 October 2026, at @AlmasTowerDMCC and SO/ Uptown Dubai, and at the 14th Dubai Precious Metals Conference, 16 and 17 November 2026, at SO/ Uptown Dubai.
