No doubt Mercedes is still the aero leader: highest top speed (low drag, as shown by +4 km/h vs McL on the same PU) AND fastest through fast Turn 19 (high downforce) → unmatched efficiency
VER lost just 10 km/h (vs ANT’s 33 km/h) between lap start and lap end → more sustainable deployment 🔋
LEC had the highest minimum speed and stayed at full throttle longer than anyone else, but his top speed was baffling. His 15 km/h deficit to ANT cost him 0.285s on the main straight alone, less than his gap to pole!
McL didn’t shine anywhere

In marketing terms, if the investment required to create a new mass-market phenomenon promises to generate more revenue and boost brand value, that justifies devaluing a driver. Yes, they would do exactly that.

In simpler terms:
🚨 Russell’s car was SLOWER than Antonelli's on S2 Straights for ALL Q2 & Q3 runs
1️⃣ between T10-11: Superclips earlier (indicates harvest-heavier energy plan for RUS)
2️⃣ Back Straight: tops out earlier & lower for unknown reasons
=Straight-line speed deficits
[USA Qualifying] Russell was Superclipping more than Antonelli on every flying lap.
Allowing for how fast each driver left the corners, Russell’s car was 0.11-0.17 s slower on the sector 2 Straights on every Q2 and Q3 run.
• On the Straights, Russell’s car harvested 0.03-0.15 MJ more per lap. Most of it came between Turn 10 and Turn 11, where he started superclipping 7-36 m earlier than Antonelli.
• Both were at 100% throttle until braking, so the difference is the car, not the driver.
• It happened in the same places every run, with no tow (Antonelli was 8-12 s behind), the same wind and the same tyres.
• The extra harvest didn’t pay back. Russell reached the next corner slower, so he recovered less under braking, and his total harvest and deploy ended level with Antonelli’s.
That’s where Russell's lap time went: sector 2, on the Straights. (*In the corners, each had his strong spots: Russell at Turn 1 and the Turn 3–5 esses, Antonelli at Turns 19 and 20.)
• On Q2 second runs, their laps were 0.03 s apart. Russell’s car lost about 0.22 s on the Straights, and he got about 0.20 s back in the corners.
• Russell’s last Q3 lap was 0.25 s slower than his best. Almost all of it was on the Straights, where the model has his car putting less energy to the wheels.
It all points to a more harvest/superclipping-heavy energy plan on Russell’s car, detrimental to lap time.

George Russell’s 2026 Austin Qualifying
He was only 0.028s behind Kimi in Q2 then couldn’t somehow match his own time in Q3 ON FRESH SOFTS. 1:34.475 on his first run, 1:34.551 on his second while Kimi did 1:34.035 on his pole lap.
My first thought is the straight-line speed. Between T9 and T11 in Q2 Kimi was doing around 275 km/h compared to George’s 260. Same gear and both at 100% throttle. 15 km/h difference? George then reached 264 km/h at the same spot on his first Q3 run but did only 256 on his second. That’s 8 km/h difference between side by side.
Yet on the long straight before T12, they were almost identical. Around 318 km/h each in Q2, then 323 for George and 324 for Kimi in Q3 so in fact the straight-line losses weren’t consistent either. George also seems to start clipping earlier in certain spots particularly between T9 and T11 and before T12 when comparing their fastest laps. I think deployment was costing him time on some straights but that still doesn’t explain all the losses.
S3 is the main issue
On his first Q3 run George was already 0.109s down on his Q2 time by T12 and finished 0.171s down. But on his second run he was actually 0.056s UP by T12 only to be 0.239s DOWN by T17. Basically almost THREE TENTHS lost between T12 and T17 and then barely anything else until the very finish.
I see no single massive speed drop. Just smaller losses through several corners adding up. And this is why I’m not convinced deployment explains his whole quali. His first Q3 run was already slower before S3, while his second was actually quicker until T12 before falling apart through the slow corners. I also don’t put it all down to his driving style either otherwise we would see a pattern and there’s no.
At this point I’m wondering whether different things were going wrong on each Q3 attempt. The first makes me question deployment. The second makes me think about grip or balance but I’m really not sure.
And if it WAS grip then why was that section so much worse than on his Q2 lap? What changed? The balance? Something in the setup? He was on fresh softs ffs. So I genuinely can’t find one consistent pattern across these attempts. The losses keep moving around, and neither deployment nor cornering alone seems to explain both Q3 runs. I’m starting to think there was more than one issue here because what else explains such different losses from one attempt to the next???

Yup same with George vs Kimi, George is the far better driver and faster at the turns but his car has had straight speed AI battery deployment issues that Mercedes refused to fix. Kimi is the biggest fraud WDC in F1 history! No real fan of F1 will respect Kimi at all!

Fernando Alonso isn't holding back after his Lap 1 clash with Alex Albon at the US GP.
He slammed the "very low" quality of drivers in the bottom third of the grid, claiming Albon "forgot that corner 11 was there" and ruined his chance for points.
