Duke Cunningham’s death is a reminder of the demise of local/regional reporting in DC. On June 12, 2005, SD Union-Trib broke story of defense lobbyists buying his home. First in a string of blockbuster scoops. Pleaded guilty 5 months later, resigned.

If telling a reporter "I'm going to murder you if this draft comes in over 2000 words" is now a crime then it's the electric chair for me I guess nypost.com/2025/05/07/media/…

There was absolutely never a time "the vast majority of corporate media employees" had any thoughts about Substack at all. 4 years ago some media columnists and tech reporters wrote some critical takes and tweets. The desire to be persecuted is bottomless.

Literally everyone explained this
Just a heads up. You have seen that Q1 GDP printed at -0.3% (q/q, SAAR). The media will likely not explain is that this result is an outlier due to a surge in imports ahead of the president's tariffs. Excluding this surge in imports (that will not recur) Q1 GDP would have printed at +3.0%. No, this is not the start of a recession.
Beep-boop definitely not getting its bonus this year. nytimes.com/2025/03/29/busin…

To spell it out: if you don't have due process and the executive branch just nabs people off the street and ignores judicial orders and makes the people disappear, you have a government that, well, does exactly that. And if that doesn't scare you, I don't know what to say.

Thanks for your concern about the accuracy of my account. It was indeed difficult to obtain photos of the orphans who had died because of the collapse of USAID: Because they were dead, I couldn't photograph them, and impoverished orphans don't leave photo archives. But this is Evan Anzoo, from a social worker who helped him before he died when USAID stopped providing his 12-cents-a-day medication.

A reminder that the job of the media is to hold powerful government actors to account, not to worship them or do their public relations. Truly embarrassing stuff here.

Such a shocking, insulting statement about an ally from anyone, let alone a senior White House official.
Who told her to say this? She obviously got in from somewhere.

WHAT IS TRUMP THINKING WITH HIS INTEREST RATE STRATEGY?
Since it's Fed week, in today's Odd Lots newsletter, I wrote about "5D chess" theories of the admin, the lack of attacks on Powell, Bessent's goal of getting 10-year yields lower, and why it's not really adding up for me.

As the Trump administration works to dismantle VOA, RFE/RL and RFA, I'm thinking about our 10 journalists who are imprisoned around the world for doing their jobs.

A libertarian radical sank America’s maritime industry. It needs to be restored.

One thing that could be a headwind to traditional Trump reaction to a cratering market (besides their stated focus on the economy needing a juice cleanse + wanting 10Y yields down) is that there seems to be some sort of plan to build a parallel MAGA economy alongside it all.
That Sam Seder video shows where we are at in terms of impossibility of discourse - economic participation will become an extension of identity politics, just based on the lack of willingness to have any discussion surrounding fact. Makes sense for Junior to develop an economy to serve a parallel reality. It's likely bait-and-switch (like most of these things are, a scheme to mostly funnel wealth upwards) as we've already seen with Rumble and PSQH. But when economic understanding takes a backseat to cultural grievance, the conditions become perfect for extraction. History suggests the pain will be widely distributed while the gains will be narrowly concentrated. But the narrative will profess otherwise.
