Dry moth specimens retain only 30-40% of their original body mass. We derived correction factors to estimate fresh weight from museum collections.

🦋 What if we could automatically extract traits from thousands of Lepidoptera specimens?
We present LEPY, a Python pipeline for automated extraction of morphological and colour traits from Lepidoptera images!

The pipeline measures several traits including:
📏 body length
🪽 forewing length
📐 specimen area
and colour traits such as:
🎨 hue, saturation, brightness
🌈 UV reflectance
📊 colour diversity (Shannon index)
We applied LEPY to moth datasets (Sphingidae & Saturniidae) along an elevational gradient in the Peruvian Andes.
The results show taxon-specific changes in morphology and colour traits with elevation.
