The Home Office is ending its contract with the Central Park Hotel in Tottenham. A legacy of Tory negligence, asylum hotels too often mean claimants stuck in inhumane conditions and communities in disarray. We pledged to end their use by 2029 and I’m glad we are well on our way.
AI is now geopolitics. In the @FT I make the case that @andyburnham needs to power up British AI and develop a plan to avoid a US ban on Chinese models that would divide the world.

I said the morning after Grenfell that it was an act of corporate manslaughter. I’m pleased that this has happened but disappointed it has been so slow.
The families and friends of the 72 innocent people who died are still waiting for justice - I hope it may finally come.

It was great to hear Andy today talking about issues that are important to our country.
I’m delighted that housing is such a big priority for the new Prime Minister, as it was for the last.
The Labour Party’s legacy in Haringey is one of the biggest council housebuilding programmes in the UK. And I’m glad the Government is still pursuing the biggest national council housebuilding programme since the postwar period.
There were big announcements on an end to ‘right to buy’ on new homes; new council powers to seize unoccupied properties; and further reforms to protect leaseholders like the people living in Coppermill Heights in my constituency, who have been stuck in a leasehold nightmare for six years.
This is absolutely the change my constituents voted for and which they need to be delivered.
Like the Prime Minister, social care is personal for me. We all know someone who has depended on social care – it’s how my mother made her living. It is a service which touches all of our lives and ensures that each one of us is able to live a life of dignity.
In areas like Tottenham, the crisis of social care is acute. So many of my constituents risk being dragged into poverty, or losing what they have, through the cost of care.
Andy’s plans to provide care - free at the point of use for all - are a matter of social justice and equality.
Andy is right: we need a new vision. Delivering a national care service should be a moral mission like the foundation of the NHS – once we get it right, we will wonder how we ever lived without it. I look forward to supporting this important work so that my constituents can negotiate later life in confidence that they will receive the care they deserve.
On devolution, we all knew that this was a big priority, but it was good to hear more about what this will mean in practice.
Andy’s vision for devolution is hugely exciting and speaks to communities in every corner of our United Kingdom. Devolution can play a prominent role in energy, economic growth, housing and more.
But where London once led the change with a new Mayoral system 26 years ago, there is a risk that we are now left behind.
I would like to find ways for the voices of London Boroughs to contribute meaningfully to the conversations in City Hall.
I look forward to working with the Minister for Local Government and with my London colleagues to ensure that devolution delivers for London.
Support for young people was also a big theme, and is one that resonates loudly in my constituency.
Tottenham is a place where young people face immense challenges, but where there are already incredible opportunities for those who can access them. That is not true for every part of the country.
Andy is right to make this a priority, and he is right that we tackle the NEET crisis by supporting, not punishing, young people.
We must rebuild our comprehensive education system. But this needs to work for communities like mine. I look forward to carving out an offer from the Government which gives young people in my constituency the best possible support to take advantage of the opportunities which exist.
And finally, on Europe.
I welcome the Prime Minister’s honesty about the damage Brexit has inflicted on our economy. Ten years on, we’re less secure, less productive, less competitive.
The UK-EU Summit is a huge opportunity to chart a new course. For the people of Tottenham and for everyone in this country, we have to take it.
Very sad to hear Bonnie Greer has died. A powerful wordsmith and artist, she was eloquent and exacting. A true life force. I will never forget her quiet fearlessness taking on Nick Griffin on Question Time. I will miss her mentorship, and her friendship. Rest in peace, Bonnie.
As a fellow north London MP it has been a privilege to stand shoulder to shoulder with my friend Keir across countless campaigns. Through difficult times, both in and out of government, I will never forget the warmth shared between our families, the times he has been there for mine, and the sense of duty which animated his politics.
Keir brought Labour back into power after 14 long years in the political wilderness and for that he deserves enormous credit. In government, faced with a country wracked by austerity and left in financial ruin, he brought stability to the economy and steadied our public services. He delivered one of the most significant overhauls of renters’ and workers’ rights in a generation, drove record investments in affordable housing, and restored Britain’s standing in the world.
That is his legacy, and I thank him for everything he has done for our movement. I look forward to doing my all to fight this by-election and keep Holborn and St Pancras Labour. 🌹
It was a pleasure to visit the beautiful West Reservoir in my constituency today with the Mayor of London @sadiqkhan to launch his 10 year plan to transform rivers and waterways across London.
It has been the greatest privilege of my life, coming from humble beginnings in Tottenham, to serve in government as @Keir_Starmer’s Foreign Secretary, Justice Secretary and Britain’s first Black Deputy Prime Minister.
I am immensely proud of what we achieved, in Opposition and in Government.
As Foreign Secretary and Deputy Prime Minister, I helped rebuild Britain’s relationships with our European allies after the catastrophic Brexit years, stood steadfastly with Ukraine in its darkest hours, championed a new partnership of equals with the Global South and was proud to play a leading role in Britain’s recognition of the State of Palestine.
I worked to secure the Special Relationship with the United States in a new era and deepened our partnerships with the Gulf and India to deliver trade, growth and security for the British people.
As Justice Secretary and Lord Chancellor, I put record investment in our courts to begin stabilising the backlog for victims left waiting too long for justice, put in changes to take our prisons back from the brink to prevent a collapse in prison capacity ever again, put massive investment in the probation service and victims and helped deliver the Hillsborough Law.
I also put in place a new approach to improving the diversity of our judiciary and made the Ministry of Justice a Whitehall leader in harnessing the potential of artificial intelligence.
I would have been proud to continue serving in Cabinet. But a new Prime Minister is entitled to build his own team, and I wish @AndyBurnham and the new Cabinet every success.
I will continue to serve the great people of Tottenham, support this Labour government from the backbenches and do everything I can to help defeat Reform again at the next general election.

78 years ago Empire Windrush arrived at Tilbury Docks. It’s a story of humanity, courage, disappointment and hope.
I was proud to host the Windrush generation recently in Number 10.
Their voices have already changed Britain and will continue to shape it for years to come.
I want every boy and young man, whatever their background or wherever they're from, to have the opportunity, support and the sense of belonging they need to thrive.
So often these young men and boys aren't in the room so hearing directly from them this week, at No.10, was a powerful reminder of why our work to improve outcomes for men and boys really matters.
🚨Good news: we're untangling the rules around tying the knot.
They say you can't put a price on love, but too often, wedding costs put marriage out of reach. That's why Labour is reforming archaic laws, giving couples more freedom over where and how they say "I do" 💍
This disgraceful act took place just days after the murder of a senior politician, the third of my colleagues in a decade.
It is a shared responsibility of all of us in our democracy to call out and condemn violence and threats against politicians.
I hope the Green Party leadership takes appropriate action this time.

Today, the Hillsborough Law returns to Parliament.
It is a lasting tribute to the 97, and to the families and survivors whose courage has changed our country.
The Hillsborough Law will change the balance of power to ensure public authorities can act with honesty and openness and that no bereaved family is ever again left to walk alone.
Their fight for truth will be written into law.
Good to meet with Denis Bećirović and Željko Komšić in London today.
The UK's friendship with Bosnia and Herzegovina matters. In an uncertain world, working closely together to uphold peace, security and stability across Europe has never been more important.
While visiting HMP Wandsworth I saw first-hand the challenges they are facing.

The whole country will be utterly shocked by the awful news about the circumstances of Ann Widdecombe’s death.
Today we come together across the political divide and I pay tribute to Ann’s dedication during her many years of public service.
My thoughts and deepest condolences are with Ann’s family and friends.
