The absence thereof is now becoming seriously damaging to the future of Guernsey plc.

Criminally irresponsible. Throw the book at the culprits

I read a quote recently (can’t recall where though) which is apt for politicians in so many jurisdictions today. The quote was: “I know exactly what to do but I don’t know how to get re-elected once I have done it”.

GEL? Then yes the STSB was appalled at what was transpiring due to a dysfunctional regulatory regime. That's why when I was president I persuaded the states to take GEL out of that regime [against lots of push back]. Trouble is the damage had been done + a debt mountain created.

.... the current regime. Re standing charges generally the problem is that if they are scrapped the unit cost has to go up to compensate. So the "normal user" ends up subsidising those who want a supply but rarely use. EG someone who self-generates but wants to stay on grid.

.... it is not regulated [but restricted by the water law] and charges went up modestly for very many years. Problem was that historically far too little capital investment was made so GW is now playing catch up. So yes, by definition, mismanagement but not by ....

New to this thread. Three answers. In relation to electricity the regulatory regime froze the basic tariffs for a decade, which not only prevented funds being put aside for capex but plunged GEL into an absurd amount of debt. In relation to water ....

That’s correct and the they borrowed from Banks on term that made it expensive to refinance and the customers have to pay to repair the balance sheet

It’s difficult enough getting a Right to Work for a locally born and educated student/school leaver. Coming from outside the island must be ridiculously difficult.

Great to see Ben Duckett doing so well on this tour, having regained his place from his very poor identical twin brother

Very amateur scam attempt received just now. Clearly it is perfectly normal for Lloyds to send a message from that address 🥱😆

The process for applying is terrible and very very confusing and assistance is somewhat lacking. For the prices of some of them you’d have thought they’d help. The process is not easy

Systematic change is needed. But in the meantime the temporary extension for STEPs will give industry and Gov some breathing space whilst pop man/Imm depts try and reduce the permits backlog.

Jersey process permits in quicker time. I believe that’s mainly due to staffing resources. We highlighted these issues a long time ago. I wouldn’t put all of the blame on politicians/Gov in this term. The evidence we (GHA) recently presented to CfHA have been taken on board.

Today’s Guernsey Press articles highlighting the absolute sh*tshow that Population Management has become. How does a backlog of 4,000 happen? Politicians not on top of their brief? Not listening to those affected by it? I’m told that the formfilling process is ridiculously time-consuming. Why aren’t renewal forms pre-populated so that only material changes need to be edited and considered? Streamline the whole process. Very basic stuff. Does nobody internally in the civil service ever think of more efficient ways to do things?

@GsySill Do you know if Jersey has the same issues? They have to comply with the exact same immigration and CTA factors.

It’s really very simple. Every person that rocks up penniless in the U.K. is going to degrade your disposable income. Every manufacturer that shuts down and stops adding value is going to degrade your disposable income. The fairy tale of net zero for an imaginary man made climate problem is going to degrade your disposable income.
