That caused major freakout, because it financially benefits some ppl.
So 2020s crime panic, "doom loop", carceral Dems, drug war+, ICE. Numbers go up.
Since the 1980s, the number of people confined by the federal government has exploded by 631%.
So much for the "land of the free."
