DEVELOPING: Florida launches effort to regain Canadian tourists amid backlash to Trump’s rhetoric, per Orlando Weekly. But I thought the Governor said we didn’t need Canadians to visit our state and our tourism industry was booming?

The U.S. job market is contracting and signaling a recession. We told you this is exactly what would happen, and we also told you that the apparent slow down of inflation was signaling the recession. -Tariffs are a TAX ON AMERICANS. -Small businesses got crushed. -Middle class is getting crushed. -Trade deficit increased. -Manufacturing spending actually went down. The trade war and the animosity towards trade partners ended up being a net negative for exports. Consumers worldwide are resentful and they are boycotting American products, and yes this matters, and yes it was because of Trump's "art of the deal" negotiation skills (or lack thereof). Cost of products went up because of tariffs, and almost all of it ended up being passed to consumers. The average consumer ended up buying less, and businesses slowed down hiring and many had to let go part of their workforce due to increase costs and uncertainty. This is literally the opposite of what MAGA voted for. We called it literally play by play, but MAGA is still in such denial that none of it matters. Tariff proponents in disbelief... time to wake up.
🔴US JOB MARKET IS CONTRACTING AS IF THERE IS A RECESSION: LinkUp estimates the US labor market lost -25,000 jobs in January. The firm tracks real-time job postings sourced directly from company websites in the world's largest economy. That would mark the 4th monthly contraction since June. Meanwhile, Fed Governor Waller: "And, last year's data will be revised downward soon to likely show that there was virtually no growth in payroll employment in 2025. ZERO. ZIP. NADA." Buckle up.

Trump: I sell pardons to the highest bidder, don't believe in the separation of powers, and want to suspend the constitution. Right-wing intellectuals: We need to support this guy to protect against threats to our institutions from Asian engineers. It's so transparently fake.

America as we know and love will not survive 3 more years of Trump. The middle class is getting destroyed. Small businesses are getting destroyed. Our relationship with trade partners is getting destroyed. Our relationship with military allies is getting destroyed. The USD is getting destroyed. The 1st, 2nd, 5th, 6th, 8th and 14th amendments of the Constitution are being destroyed. Accountability is getting destroyed. Even respect and decency are getting destroyed. Where does it end?

Why are Trump and MAGA the way they are? An analysis: Trump's psychology isn't random—raised by a narcissistic father who valued "winners," never faced real consequences for bankruptcies or scandals, reality TV trained him that conflict = ratings. His revenge obsession is genuine and stated: "I am your retribution" isn't rhetoric, it's his platform. But MAGA isn't just Trump. At its core, it's rage culture fueled by hate and discrimination—racism, xenophobia, misogyny, homophobia as features, not bugs. Trump didn't create American hatred; he just gave it permission to be loud and proud. He channeled real grievances—manufacturing jobs gone, wages stagnant since the 70s, cultural displacement as white Christian America went from default majority to one group among many. The economic anxiety is real, but it's weaponized to target minorities, immigrants, and anyone who threatens white Christian dominance. The closed media ecosystem (Fox → Newsmax → OANN → Truth Social) monetizes this grievance and rewards outrage over truth. MAGA became identity over ideology—not about policies (Trump shifts constantly), but tribal belonging and "owning the libs." The cruelty isn't a side effect—it's the entire point. The "weaponized DOJ" claim is strategic projection: accuse opponents of what you're planning to justify doing it yourself. Classic authoritarian playbook. It works because tribal epistemology ("our side = good") beats facts, and Dems care about norms while MAGA doesn't. Living in Ukraine, I see the stakes aren't abstract: MAGA's revenge politics extends to abandoning allies who resist strongmen. This is rule of law vs. authoritarianism in real time.

Today @CatoInstitute published our report providing the first look at the fiscal effects of the wave of legal & illegal immigration over the last 3 decades. It shows immigrants created surpluses every year, by a combined $14.5 trillion, even as deficits grew

Just a reminder, the U.S. is shooting its own tires ... Canada is the largest export market for U.S.-made vehicles, with the U.S. shipping US$23.2-billion worth of vehicles here in 2024. That’s more than the U.S.’s next seven largest export markets — Germany, Mexico, China, United Arab Emirates, South Korea, Saudi Arabia and Belgium — combined, according to the International Trade Administration. Stephen Beatty, a former Toyota Canada executive, has said that the current policy landscape encourages automakers to ship from manufacturing operations outside North America, particularly if they have a free-trade agreement with Canada. “Whatever the U.S. thinks it’s doing, the problem is they’re giving up the one good export market they’ve got,” he said. “It’s a perverse impact of U.S. policy. They think they’re protecting the U.S. market, but the U.S. market continues to decline.”

It bothers me that politicians lie. It bothers me more that they tell lies so obvious a reasonable 7 year old could see through them, and millions of voters still accept them without question.

The trade deficit increased by 94% in November. That's twice the amount of the previous month. About a third of that comes from Europe. What you don't hear from this admin besides the fact that US consumers are paying the tariffs is that tariffs kill our exports. So, last month, the EU, our largest trading partner, bought $8 billion less of US goods. Not good for farming or manufacturing or any business. cnb.cx/4bkWPyh

Nothing has proven to me more that financialization is a mistake for the U.S. economy than Teslas vehicle sales cratering while their stock keeps going up. China is actually winning but as long as number goes up, Elon thinks he’s winning.

Remember when planes were crashing and Sean Duffy tried to blame it on DEI.... And then Elon and the DOGE bros broke our government, stole data, and got rid of USAID resulting in the deaths of 600,000 impoverished humans... And then Pete Hegseth disclosed military strikes in an unsecure Signal chat and started blowing up boats at sea... And then Tulsi Gabbard held a press conference trying to implicate Obama in fake crimes and said he would be arrested... And then Pam Bondi covered up the Epstein files, gave Ghislaine Maxwell special privileges, and started "prosecuting" all of Trump's enemies at his request via tweet... And then Kristi Noem's armed, masked ICE agents shot and killed two innocent Americans in the street. That escalated quickly.

Must-read piece from Tom Friedman: “It is so obvious that only a pathological narcissist who insists on having his name on everything — from someone else’s Kennedy Center to someone else’s Nobel Peace Prize — would risk all of the above to seize Greenland, especially when you consider that we already have the right to operate bases in Greenland and station forward troops and missiles there. We also have the right to invest in extracting its minerals.” “If indeed America were a company, the board of directors would have responded to behavior like Trump’s by announcing an “intervention” with the C.E.O.” “Unfortunately, America’s board of directors, the Republican-led U.S. Congress, has been completely self-neutered. And so now, we the people, we the shareholders, are about to get stuck with the bill.” nytimes.com/2026/01/21/opini…

Chamath is just blatantly spreading false information now. But it’s true he knows about fraud! In 2021, he got retail investors to back Clover Health without revealing it was under investigation for Medicare fraud. He made 10s of millions while retail investors got screwed.
Daycares in Minnesota outspent each of the Mag7 in political giving. Seems not fishy. Per Gemini: “Based on federal lobbying disclosures for the full year of 2024, zero individual tech companies reached the $35 million threshold. While 2024 was a record-breaking year for many tech giants, their individual federal spending remained well below $35 million. Even the largest spenders in the industry—Amazon, Meta, and Alphabet—typically hover in the $15M to $25M range.”
Readers added context they thought people might want to know
The $35 million figure refers to gov funding received by MN daycares through the Child Care Assistance Program (CCAP), not political donations made by them dcyf.mn.gov/programs-direc… Quoted tweet author admits that he knows this x.com/beaverd/status…

Everyone should read this week’s WSJ story on Trump selling pardons. It’s some of the most corrupt shit I’ve ever seen—you can literally corner him at one of his lame parties and walk away with a pardon. How is this not the biggest story in the country?

“Let’s just say the quiet part out loud: America didn’t get hijacked by ‘patriots.’ It got hijacked by failures — and by the very smart, very cynical people who realized how easy those failures are to manipulate. For decades, the United States has produced a whole population of folks who never did the reading, never did the learning, never gained any skills, never grew emotionally, never took accountability for a single thing in their lives — and then reached adulthood furious that the world wasn’t built around their bad decisions. They flunked out of life, coasted on the easiest path possible, and then expected the entire country to bend so they never have to feel uncomfortable or inadequate. Enter the political strategists who said, ‘Oh wow…this country has a gigantic pool of angry, insecure underachievers who will believe absolutely anything that absolves them of responsibility. If we just tell them they’re right and everyone else is wrong, they’ll worship us.’ And that’s exactly what happened. A movement didn’t rise because these people were strong. It rose because someone finally figured out how to weaponize their weakness. Tell the failures they’re actually the real Americans. Tell the losers that the smart people secretly envy them. Tell the ones who never succeeded that their lack of success is someone else’s fault. Tell the folks who never grew up that maturity is ‘woke.’ And suddenly you’ve built an army — not of thinkers, not of leaders, not of contributors — but of emotionally fragile adults addicted to being lied to because the truth hurts too much. Meanwhile, the people at the top of this movement? They don’t respect them. They don’t admire them. They don’t even like them. They use them. Because they know these people don’t want solutions — they want soothing. They don’t want progress — they want validation. They don’t want responsibility — they want stories that make them feel better about failing at life. So the grifters show up and say, ‘Hey buddy, none of this is your fault. You’re perfect. It’s the immigrants, the books, the teachers, the scientists, the cities, the gays, the trans people — anyone but you.’ And the failures eat it up like dessert. Because it feels good. Because it’s easier. Because they finally found a political movement where doing the least, learning nothing, and hating everyone is not only accepted — it’s celebrated. This movement isn’t powered by greatness. It’s powered by fragility, by resentment, by the bottom of the class finally hearing a bedtime story where they’re the heroes instead of the ones who fell behind. And the people in charge? They laugh behind closed doors. They know exactly who they’re dealing with. They know if you give failures an enemy to hate and a fantasy to believe in, they’ll hand you the keys to the country — and thank you for the privilege. America doesn’t have a ‘patriot problem.’ America has a failure problem — and a ruling class that learned how to turn those failures into a political ATM. It’d be tragic if it weren’t so predictable.” - Joann Blake
