WE FORCED BIRMINGHAM ONTO THE RAPE GANG INQUIRY. NOW THE FIGHT IS OVER WHAT IT IS ALLOWED TO EXPOSE. For thirty-five years, Birmingham's authorities had evidence of children being raped and sexually exploited. Reports were suppressed. Investigations were resisted. Senior officials went on to prestigious jobs while the children were left without answers. We exposed the record. We campaigned for Birmingham to be included in the national statutory inquiry. And Birmingham was finally named. But getting Birmingham onto the list was only the beginning. The council leader who refused to request the inquiry has welcomed it. His council wants to decide which historic records it republishes. And before the inquiry had heard a single witness, Birmingham MP Ayoub Khan was telling it to focus on victims "rather than the identities of perpetrators." The inquiry's terms of reference explicitly require it to examine the ethnicity, religion and culture of those responsible. We also had to campaign for this to be explicitly incorporated. So here is the question. Will the national inquiry expose who protected the rape gangs? Or will the institutions and politicians whose conduct must be investigated succeed in controlling what comes out?
