Actors use scripts, musicians use scores, surgeons follow protocols. So what? It’s a rubbish analogy because teaching isn’t a performance or a procedure. Great teaching is responsive. It requires expertise, adaptation and professional judgement.
Actors use scripts. Musicians use sheet music. Surgeons follow established procedures. Why are scripts for teachers treated as an affront to professionalism? @ehanford explains why Direct Instruction uses them.

I did some Q5 work this morning. Students had around 20 minutes to craft the opening of a past exam task. Whilst they wrote, I read every piece and highlighted a single sentence to share and discuss in tomorrow’s lesson. So no slide deck needed. Just a visualiser and a pen ✍️

Oracy: a tale of three students. Harry is a boisterous, noisy lad but he's actually smart and perceptive when he chooses to "lock in". Last year I asked Year 9 why they thought Orwell used animals to write about politics. Harry offered a two-word answer. "They're innocent." 1/

I’ve tried to make the sources and questions for a mini English Language P2 assessment more accessible for one of the classes I teach by placing everything on a single A3 page. No need for flicking though stuff. I’ve also used more generous spacing and numbered every line 📝

En route to a meeting this afternoon, I spoke to a couple of sixth formers who happened to be talking (of all things) about mortgages as I was passing. We chatted briefly and two things became obvious 1/4

Secondly, connected to this struggle, is the deep pessimism that both students feel about ever being able to get a foot on the property ladder – hence the original conversation they were having when I passed 3/4

All of which reinforces what we already know well enough – that it’s tough out there. Nothing like it was when I was growing up in the 90s and 00s. Young people are rightly angry about the situation as it stands and really switched on about the politics of it 4/4

The decline of reading. ‘By the end of the twentieth century, a college graduate born after 1969 read less than someone born before 1950 with a basic level of education. Indeed, nowadays many rich and highly educated people are much less well-read than many members of the least privileged classes had been in the middle of the twentieth century.’ edwest.co.uk/p/doomscrolling…
