The Bank of England has raised interest rates to 4%, supposedly to tackle inflation.
There is just one problem with this decision. The Bank knows that much of the inflation we are suffering is being driven by rising oil and energy prices, largely resulting from conflict in the Middle East.
It also knows that raising interest rates cannot reduce those prices.
So why is it doing this?
The answer is that the Bank believes it must suppress demand elsewhere in the economy to compensate for rising energy costs.
In other words, it is deliberately making mortgages more expensive, increasing business borrowing costs, discouraging investment and reducing household spending power.
And all this when people are already struggling with higher energy bills. That is problem number one.
There is, however, another problem. Higher interest rates increase costs for businesses, which can then feed through into higher prices. They can, in that case, add to inflation rather than reduce it.
The Bank is imposing economic pain to address a problem its chosen policy cannot directly solve.
That is not sound economic management. It is the consequence of an economic dogma that refuses to recognise the difference between inflation caused by excessive demand and inflation caused by supply shocks.
When will we learn?

Michel Barnier says the 'door is open' to the UK rejoining the EU.
That the UK could join the EU without adopting the Euro, just as we did before.
But what is not negotiable is the EU Single Market - no cherry picking.
Your reminder that in 2015 former Conservative MEP Daniel Hannan said "Absolutely nobody is talking about threatening our place in the single market" - since, the UK has left the EU Single Market and Hannan now sits in the House of Lords.
In 2015 Conservative MP and Environment Secretary Owen Patterson said of leaving the EU, "only a madman would actually leave the market." - After resigning because of a lobbying scandal he ran the Centre for Brexit Policy for three years, basically advocating for the thing he said only a madman would do. He also appealed to the ECHR for help, that's the same ECHR the Conservative party says it would leave.
Nigel Farage used to say the UK could be like Norway, which is outside the EU, but inside the EU Single Market saying, "They are rich, they’re happy and they’re self-governing countries" - so even according to Farage, being in the EU Single Market makes the UK a sovereign self-governing country.
And Boris Johnson first said, "I’d vote to stay in the single market. I’m in favour of the single market," but three days after referendum changed his tune, "There will continue to be free trade, and access to the single market."
Being in the EU Single Market is something that Brexiters either specifically said we would retain, or implied that we would. So rejoining the EU Single Market is actually in line with what they said would happen leading up to the 2016 Brexit referendum.
The sooner the UK rejoins the EU Single Market, the better.

BREAKING: SWEET KARMA! Democrat Scott Colom, who is about to win the Mississippi Senate seat, only ran after his MAGA opponent stopped him from obtaining a lifetime federal judge position!
This is one of the most glorious backfires in American history...
Back in November of 2022, President Biden nominated Colom to the federal district court in northern Mississippi. He received support from the state's senior senator, Republican Roger Wicker.
But Senator Cindy Hyde-Smith, who Colom is now leading by 1,764 in the vote count from Tuesday, refused to support the nomination. In fact, she blocked the Senate from even considering him by withholding her blue slip, an old Senate custom that lets one home-state senator veto a judge.
She defended her indefensible move by insisting that he couldn't be trusted with such power because of past support for transgender rights. In reality, she was just pandering to the racist MAGA base by blocking a Black Democrat.
But if she hadn't blocked him, Colom would be a judge right now. Instead, he's poised to take Hyde-Smith's seat, flipping a seat that a Democrat hasn't been able to win since 1972 in a state that handed Trump 61% of its vote in 2024.
While the race has not yet been called, if Colom maintains this lead, as he seems likely to do, the seat is his.
Please ❤️ and share if you can't wait to see Colom in the Senate!

The Chancellor admitted that Scotland’s energy wealth would now be over £1 trillion.
But this wealth doesn’t exist — because the UK Government squandered it and pocketed the profits.
And that’s why Scottish households are paying £1200 more for their energy bills than Labour promised.
Taking control of our energy is not only crucial to build the wealth for Scotland’s future — it’s the only way to ensure that energy rich Scotland isn’t paying some of the highest bills across Europe.

The nation has been left stunned after a man who got a tax payer-funded BBC chauffeur to pick up his 16-year-old girlfriend from school when he was 29 years old has turned out to be a rapist. I mean where were the signs?
The man in question is attempted comedian Russell Brand—someone who mysteriously carved out a TV and movie career despite not being remotely funny or likeable. If you don’t know who I’m talking about, Brand is the one who always looks like he’s pissing on railway lines. Yes, he’s the ex-husband of the first woman to take a joy ride in space!
Brand ended his marriage to Katy Perry when the allegations against him first emerged. He then became a Youtuber so he could convince people that the eventual court case was an establishment stitch up. This argument would’ve been more convincing if he’d found a single person to defend his character in court.
Brand conveniently discovered that he loved Jesus and started carrying a Bible everywhere he went. This was definitely not for the cameras. He was interviewed by Piers Morgan who asked him which Bible passages were most meaningful to him. Unfortunately, he couldn’t answer. At least he’ll have plenty of time to spend with his booky wook in prison.
Brand actually thought he was gonna be redemeed, saying he could “feel God’s presence” while walking into court. He told his social media followers the prayers seemed to be working. Unfortunately for him, God doesn’t like rapists any more than the jury did.
After falling silent while the prosecution cross-examined him on why he kept groping women without their consent, and forcing himself on them, he was convicted of rape and three counts of sexual assault. This came as a huge surprise to everyone who’d looked the other way for the past 25 years.
Brand will no doubt be delighted to find that many prison inmates share his disregard for consent. I’m sure he won’t object if his big strong cellmate decides he just can’t help himself.
Brand’s sex crimes were so well-known that his fellow comedians called him out on stage for years before the law caught up with him. It’s not like he kept any of this a secret. He bragged about his rapes and sexual assaults in a book that reached number 1 in the Sunday Times best sellers list and was widely praised by critics. He was declared Shagger of the Year three times by the Sun newspaper.
His management enrolled him in a sex addiction clinic where he was asked to draw up a list of all the women he’d wronged. He compared the process to Saddam Hussein being asked about individual kurds he’d killed. In a follow-up memoir, he wrote of his time in the “nicky wick”, “If this is what I’m telling you, can you imagine what’s being left out?”
Brand was so confident of his crimes that he laughed on the radio about how he indecently exposed himself to women. He even offered to send his naked assistant to one man during an interview—the man in question was Sir Jimmy Saville.
Brand caused a public outcry in 2008 when he called 78-year-old Andrew Sachs for his BBC Radio 2 show with Jonathan Woss. The incident was pre-recorded and producers decided it was fine to air. During the call, Brand said, “I shagged your granddaughter”, made a mock apology to Sachs, and then suggested he commit suicide.
Since humiliating old people counts as entertainment in the UK, both men continued to have successful TV careers and Brand even starred in a couple of terrible Hollywood movies. It’s funny how rapists fail upwards, isn’t it?
Brand is just the latest in a long line of people to follow the proud BBC tradition of sexual offences. They include Sir Jimmy Saville, Rolf Harris CBE, Stuart Hall OBE, Huw Edwards MBE, Chris Denning, and Tim Westwood. You’ll be pleased to know the BBC did their utmost to shelter these men for years until the law caught up with them. Aren’t you glad you’re forced to pay your licence fee?

It's the same reason why the money for bank bailouts in 2008 should have been given to the people not the banks - because it would have eventually ended up in the banks, just going via every business in local communities on its journey!
