BREAKFAST AT TIFFANY’S was released 65 years ago today. Moon River was almost cut from the film after a test screening. Audrey Hepburn fought to keep it, telling the producers, “Over my dead body.” The song went on to win the Oscar for Best Original Song.

Gene Kelly first saw Leslie Caron as a young ballerina on the Paris stage. A few years later, when Cyd Charisse had to drop out of 1951’s "An American in Paris" due to pregnancy, Kelly cast 19-year-old Caron in her very first film role. What you’re seeing here is the “toned-down” reworked version of this scene, choreographed by Kelly, after the original was deemed far too sexy for the censors. One can only imagine….

One of my favorite bits in Shaun of the Dead (2004) is Shaun’s morning trip to the shop. 🧟‍♂️ Edgar Wright fills the background with signs that the zombie apocalypse is already underway, but Shaun is so locked into his daily routine that he barely notices anything around him.

“What are we going to do?” Producer Carlo Ponti was interested in adapting Pasternak’s novel, “Dr. Zhivago” as a vehicle for his wife, Sophia Loren, and asked David Lean to write a treatment. Lean, who had recently made “Lawrence of Arabia” (1962), wanted to make an intimate, romantic film after his action-packed epic. One of the first actors signed was Omar Sharif, who had played Lawrence's friend Sherif Ali. Sharif loved the novel, and asked to be cast in the role of Pasha (which ultimately went to Tom Courtenay). He was astonished when Lean suggested that he play Zhivago. Peter O'Toole had been the director’s original choice, but he had turned the part down. Michael Caine claimed that he had also read for Zhivago, and participated in screen shots with Christie, but after watching the results with Lean, said it had to be Omar Sharif. Lean managed to convince Ponti that Loren was not right for the role of Lara, saying she was "too tall", and confiding in screenwriter Robert Bolt that no one would accept Loren as a virgin in the early parts of the film. Sarah Miles and Jane Fonda were also considered for Lara. Ultimately, Christie was cast, based on her performance in “Billy Liar” (1963).

Glen Campbell cried the first time he heard "Wichita Lineman." The song was not even finished. Jimmy Webb had imagined a lonely lineman maintaining wires that connected everyone else while missing someone he could not reach. He gave Campbell a demo with only two verses and no bridge. Campbell recorded it anyway, using a guitar solo where the missing verse might have gone. The song reached No. 3 and went gold. Bob Dylan reportedly called it "the greatest song ever written." I understand why. Few songs have ever made loneliness sound so beautiful.

MARY TYLER MOORE accidentally nailed a trick shot in one take, in a 1962 episode of "The Dick Van Dyke Show" It was intended an expert pool player would film the trick, but to everyone's surprise Mary totally crushed it.

🇯🇵 Wim Wenders' did an amazing job of showing what Tokyo looked like in the middle of the 1980s. Sometimes, it almost looks like a dream or like AI but it's actually completely real.

Back in 2003, a German film crew filming in the Gobi Desert captured an incredibly moving moment: after a tough two-day birth, a mother camel rejected her newborn. A nomadic family then performed the ancient Hoos singing ritual passed down for generations. Once the song ended, the camel shed tears and finally accepted her baby. This powerful scene became one of the most memorable parts of the Oscar-nominated documentary The Story of the Weeping Camel.

Danny Kaye can be a debonair, an Indian dancer or a flamenco star - all in the same number. 🎭 “Rhythm of a New Romance” from On the Riviera (1951), choreographed by Jack Cole, showcases Kaye’s astonishing versatility; and marks Gwen Verdon’s film debut. The song was written by Kaye’s wife, Sylvia Fine. The film traces its roots back to the short-lived 1934 Broadway production The Red Cat, which Fox quickly transformed into Folies Bergère de Paris (1935), then remade as That Night in Rio (1941). #OnTheRiviera #DannyKaye #JackCole #GwenVerdon #HollywoodMusical
