It is about time @_AfricanUnion acted against Ethiopia and relocated its headquarters to another more appropriate African city. It is now abundantly clear that #Ethiopia has repeatedly and appallingly abused the AU Host Country Agreement and failed to abide by the accepted diplomatic immunities and privileges as per the Vienna Convention on Diplomatic Relations. ➡️It is alarming that Ethiopian security agents were accused of assaulting, arresting and abusing many accredited diplomats, @UN aid agency workers and AU affiliated bodies staff. These are acts of abuses by Ethiopian authorities is absolutely against accepted diplomatic norms and international law. ➡️In the 2024 AU Summit there were reports of appalling breaches of diplomatic norms and protocols by Ethiopian authorities. ➡️For example, the Somalia president was attacked in his hotel by armed Ethiopian security forces and his body guards had acted swiftly and averted attempted assassination. ➡️Alarmingly, the Somali President who was accompanied by President of Djibouti were both attacked and denied access to the AU conference facility by armed and agitated Ethiopian agents that led to another incident. ➡️Similarly, there were ugly scenes and violent confrontations against a number of delegations from around Africa by Ethiopian security agents at the AU conference hall. ➡️In November 2023 @AfDB_Group, African Development Bank Group accused Ethiopia that two of its staff were unlawfully arrested, physically assaulted, and detained by security agents without any official explanation. ➡️Eritrea has also accused Ethiopia in the past of attempting to intimidate and threaten her diplomats. For almost ten years Eritrea’s right to participate in African Union summits and other meetings in Addis Ababa were hindered by Ethiopia’s refusal to extend proper diplomatic and security guarantee which is an appalling breach of the Host Country Agreement with AU. ➡️ In sum, to restore the credibility, integrity and impartiality of this august body among Africans, it is imperative for @_AfricanUnion and @AUC_MoussaFaki to authorise ASAP an independent investigation which would look at Ethiopia’s appalling abuses and alleged violations agains AU Host Country Agreement. ➡️ In the interim, I’d like to appeal to the African Union to adopt an interim measure by relocating the headquarters to another more appropriate African city. #AULeaveAddis #Somalia #Eritrea #Sudan #Djibouti #AUSummit2024 #EthiopiaStayInYourborders #NotAnInch
