The state’s ability to waste money is astonishing.
‘That’s £190,000 per person…’ ‘We could buy them all a house!” @NickFerrariLBC runs the numbers on the government's pledge to end rough sleeping by Christmas.

New low for normalized Jew-hate in the American Democratic Party. Very sad: Painting your political opponents as puppets of Jews, as this El-Sayed ad does, and as crazed baby-killers and money-grubbing villains who are the root cause of every bad thing not just in the world, but in your life—from wars to the price of eggs to the reason you can’t have free healthcare—is not just low-grade Jew-hate. It’s pure Third Reich stuff, translated directly from the original German. Do you remember when Jewish Democrats in Michigan explained that they would vote for El-Sayed despite his open disdain for Jews, since there are many other important issues they need him to fight for? That anything was worth it to “defeat MAGA”? Well, here’s El-Sayed’s answer to them: Don’t worry, all those issues we agree on, like healthcare, inflation, and climate change, I’m going to make them about Jews too! I will tell the public that the Jews are the reason they can’t have those things.

I think most people earning 10 times this don’t have an accountant. And almost nobody has a lawyer on standby.

He’s not entirely wrong. A large minority of the high and middle earners I know well have left or are planning to leave.
They have given up on the idea of growth so their only option is squeeze every penny out of the productive minority. Unless there is a fast reversal in these kinds of policies in 2029, everyone I know is out. Without this group, Britain falls in to the third world overnight.

Imagine there are two brothers: A & B. A has no assets & no job. B has a business worth £1m but with debts, staff not trained in modern machinery, & many repairs & upgrading needed of its plant & equipment. Then an aunt dies & leaves them each £100k.+

It’s almost funny that this is being pumped out with zero recognition that this has nothing to do with Russia or Syria and everything to do with not having built nuclear.

Gail’s is viciously exploiting the proletariat’s need for £7 loaves of sourdough bread and oddly flavoured croissants. It’s like feudal times all over again.
Why would private equity firms like Bain Capital want to own Gail's? Because like care homes and places to live, bread is a basic human need – and therefore profitable forever. I explain to @ShelaghFogarty why private equity's hostile takeover of our basic services matters.

Andy Haldane interview: **The financial situation is precarious - the penny hasn't dropped in No 10** 'The penny has not yet fully dropped, including in Downing Street. You see that in us having the highest borrowing costs in the G7, despite not having the highest debts and deficits 'It’s the old [Ernest] Hemingway thing, isn’t it? How do you go bankrupt? First slowly, then very quickly. 'Keir [Starmer] lost the dressing room. Andy’s biggest risk is that he loses the dealing room. And then that’s an even more painful way to go, as Liz Truss would tell you.' **Britain is at or close to being taxed out** 'The truth is, as a nation, we are at or close to being taxed out,” he says. “And we are at or close to being maxed out in terms of borrowing. 'So for me, the economics of this are very straightforward. We have a public sector, a government sector with a balance sheet whose productivity has failed to rise this century. And we have a private sector which is actually primed, its balance sheet is in good shape. 'If you want good growth in every postcode — dear God, I want that as much as the next man, probably just as much as Andy in fact — the root is by unlocking those animal spirits and that means a smaller state, lower taxes and that means lower government spending and tough choices around that' **The economy could 'crater' without spending cuts** “This is not a hypothetical risk. Look across the Channel, not just to what’s happening in France, but what’s happening in Greece or Italy or Portugal or Spain a decade and a bit ago. Avoid that like the plague 'Because when you are forced involuntarily into making much more draconian cuts to appease financial markets and get them back on side that will, one, crater the economy. And, two, almost certainly crater your popularity 'That for me is the peril that comes from prevarication on this front. The peril that comes from not using up political capital and making hard choices' **A 'mañana' Budget does not speak to the urgency of now** 'The public finances dimension is of course a real concern for me. I feel the time to get on top of that is now because who knows what might turn up tomorrow. And a mañana budget doesn’t speak to the urgency of now 'The mañana choices will not be easier tomorrow. They’re going to be much harder. So backloading them, crossing your fingers and hoping that the weather turns, for me would not be the preferred course, would not be the prudent course, and risks next year being even more of a heavy lift than would otherwise be the case' **Banking taxes are 'penny wise, pound foolish'** 'The point that actually weighs with me most heavily is that this isn’t just about the banks. If you are felt to be a country that is in the business of doing windfall taxes — if you earn profits, the taxman cometh — that is not a hospitable environment for investors. 'It means you mark down the value of UK businesses and mark up the cost of lending money to those businesses. And that is not a good growth strategy over the medium term. Penny wise, pound foolish' **What does ending 40 years of neoliberalism mean?** 'Have you been to Manchester? You know it’s the embodiment of neoliberalism done well. Success is founded on being a magnetic attractor of capital, or people, of business and culture. That’s what the UK should become' **What does public control of utilities mean?** 'From kind of full fat nationalisation, which would cost an arm and a leg, right through to tinkering with the regulatory rules. If you’re in the water industry, the energy industry, parts of the transport industry, investors are saying, ‘Hang on a sec, I’m not putting money in here.' thetimes.com/uk/politics/art…

“If you define poverty as being in the bottom third of households, then a third of children are in poverty”. Great insight. Also, I’m not sure the Greens are in a very strong place to complain about politicians failing to focus on the U.K. and its problems.
'Is that a really good use of his time?' 'Raising money for a cancer charity?' The Green Party's @floschechter brands Andy Burnham going on Gogglebox as 'ridiculous'.

Six months late but good to see the @spectator catch up to the story that Jonathan Powell wasn’t vetted when he was appointed as the National Security Advisor. Which means he also wasn’t vetted when he was appointed as the Prime Minister’s Special Envoy to the British Indian Ocean Territory three months earlier, a role that the Government refuse to confirm the date he was appointed. Why won’t the Government confirm which day he started his role? What will it reveal about the access he had to the Chagos deal and the FCDO prior to being in post?
“Round about the same time we made a political appointment for national Security Advisor of Jonathan Powell and as far as I remember we appointed him and then we began the DV” Morgan McSweeney confirms that Jonathan Powell didn’t receive his Developed Vetting security clearance until after he was appointed as the National Security Advisor in November 2024. He was appointed as the Prime Minister’s Special Envoy to the British Indian Ocean Territory on 6th September 2024, meaning he didn’t have the appropriate clearances to view classified documents in August 2024, as I asked the Prime Minister at PMQs last week. This Government is happy to play fast and loose with national security in order to prop up Keir Starmer’s chumocracy.
