Today, we were pleased to join the @UgandaEITI at the launch of Uganda’s third Extractive Industries Transparency Initiative (EITI) Report for the fiscal year 2021–2022.
The 2021–2022 report highlights key recommendations to promote transparency, which include the following:
📌 The UGEITI MSG should advocate for establishing or strengthening the legal framework that mandates the participation of both companies and government agencies in transparency reporting. This will ensure that all parties are legally required to submit timely and accurate reports in compliance with EITI standards.
📌 Disclosure of financial statements by reporting companies (EITI Requirements 2.6.b and 4.1.c). State Owned Enterprises (SOEs) and companies making material payments should publicly disclose their financial statements.
📌 The Petroleum Authority of Uganda (PAU) should ensure the timely and complete disclosure of project costs, including Capital Expenditures (CAPEX) and Operating Expenditures (OPEX). This would improve transparency and allow stakeholders to better understand the financial landscape of Uganda's extractive sector.
📌 The Government of Uganda should develop and implement a framework for disclosing greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions from extractive industries. This framework would require extractive companies to report on their GHG emissions, align with international practices and climate commitments, and include guidelines for calculating and reporting emissions data.

The recent tussle over exactly how many small-scale mining licenses have been issued, & when, led me down a rabbit hole full of strange facts. The "ban" on small-scale mining was a sham. It hid the biggest grab of gold concessions in Ghana's history.

UNLOCKING GHANA’S FULL MINERAL POTENTIAL
---------------------------
My main man, Dr. Kwasi Ampofo @kdampofo, will deliver the 12th UMaT Alumni Association (ALUMaT) on “Unlocking Ghana’s Full Mineral Potential” at Tarkwa Main Campus next Friday.
Here is a synopsis of Dr Ampofo's talk:
Demand for critical metals will grow over the next three decades, buoyed by a rising population and the global transition to cleaner energy. The use of manganese for clean technology alone is set to increase almost ninefold by 2030. The world's appetite for lithium and bauxite, the reddish ore used to make aluminium, will grow five and twice, respectively. Ghana has significant deposits of all three metals and is a key producer of two. How can the country harness its mineral wealth? This lecture will explore 10 strategic areas where Ghana can leverage its natural endowment to grow the economy, benefit its people, and contribute to a sustainable future through infrastructure development and value addition.
About Dr Kwasi Ampofo
Kwasi Ampofo is the Head of Metals and Mining at BloombergNEF based in London. His research covers industrial metals, rare-earth metals, battery metals and the pathways for miners to reach net-zero. Prior to BloombergNEF, he worked at Anglo American and Nous Group in Australia. He completed his PhD in Mineral Economics at the University of Queensland, Australia and BSc in Mining Engineering at the University of Mines and Technology, Ghana. He serves as a non-executive director on the board of Amira Global.
