Two things I took away from this whole drama, and I think every designer who wants to take their career beyond just designing should pay attention First, from the designer perspective If all you want to do is design, collect your money and move on, that’s fine But if you want to build a business around your skills, become a business-minded designer and move beyond just executing what clients tell you to do, then you need to start looking at things differently For instance, when a prospect approaches you, don’t just jump on a call asking what their budget is or telling them how much you charge Understand their business first. How do they make money? What are they selling? Who are they selling to? What problems are they trying to solve? And most importantly, where does your work come in? Because if I’m going to charge a business $1,500 or more, I want to understand what I’m helping them achieve with that money I don’t just want to design something beautiful and disappear. I want to understand how my work contributes to the business And that’s the difference between just being a designer and becoming a designer who understands business Now, from @ChetaOgbuzuru (the founders) perspective If you’re building a business and looking to employ people, you also need to understand that hiring is an investment You need to know exactly what you want this person to do, the value they will bring, whether your business can afford them and whether you can sustain that payment And if someone’s salary expectation is beyond your budget, that’s fine. You can negotiate or simply move on You don’t have to make it personal or turn a recruitment conversation into a public argument I don’t know everything that happened during their call, so I’m not going to pretend I do. But one thing I know is that both designers and founders need to understand the business side of what they’re doing. shikena😑
