Good opportunity to revisit the Everyday Abundance episode on driving your car, which explains the origins of the Lincoln Highway and the stroke of p.r. luck illustrated below. abundance.institute/our-work…
OTD in 1913, the old Lincoln Highway, the first automobile highway across the United States, was dedicated. Road trip! (@iowahawkblog will no doubt have something to say about this, but I happen to know he was up late last night.)

Economist (and Nobel laureate) Paul Krugman: “Control of Starlink must, one way or another, be taken away from Elon Musk. It’s a matter of national security: we cannot let private individuals make foreign and defense policy, and it would be totally irresponsible to leave a crucial military asset in the hands of a racist, authoritarian conspiracy theorist.” paulkrugman.substack.com/p/i…

Most of the link between ultra-processed food and diabetes comes down to one thing: sweet drinks. UK Biobank, 188K people followed for 14 years. Researchers split "ultra-processed" into its parts: processed meat, sweet snacks, salty snacks, sweet drinks, ready meals and fried food. After adjusting for BMI and nutrients, sweet drinks carried most of the risk, 12% higher per standard deviation of intake. Salty snacks added a little. The rest, not much. Don't drink sugar.. doi.org/10.1186/s12916-026-0…

♦️♦️Te invito a compartir #Diademuertos

You know where the veil between Heaven and Earth is thinnest? Every day, in every time zone, at every Mass, throughout the world, at the moment of Consecration. Behold! The Lamb of God who takes away the sin of the world.
The veil between the living and the spirit worlds is at it's thinnest today. Blessings from Glastonbury on Samhain. #samhain #Halloween2026 #halloween

That's why I don't think exercise after 50 should be only about building muscle. We also need force, speed, power, weight-bearing work and, when appropriate, some impact. Your bones are just as important for longevity as they are for locomotion. howardluksmd.substack.com/p/…

Good article about how China has gone massively into debt and kicked millions of people off their property to build pointless bridges and underused airports and high-speed trains so that gullible people on websites like this one think communism is cool. economist.com/china/2026/10/…

i for one welcome our machine auditors
People who have been in research fields develop a felt sense that most "research" (in almost any field that isn't exactingly technical) is research theater, and many superstar careers enjoy star status not because of a unique connection to the truth but because of a unique connection with an audience. No one really has the time or stature to, from a position of objectivity and trust, bring popular researchers to heel. But it will get increasingly hard to hide from serious critique. The machines can do critique now, at the level of depth and rigor previously only possible for the academically deranged. We're going to have to revise a lot of what we "know" about the world that isn't really knowledge but is actually just received popular consensus - like floating voltages without grounding wires. The grounding wires are coming.

The thing about Piketty, Saez, Zucman, etc. is that they make some large errors and an absolutely Brobdingnagian mountain of smaller ones which just happen to almost always point in one direction. They've polluted the discourse on inequality more than anyone else.
As an experiment, I plugged the famous Piketty-Saez 2003 paper into AI and asked it to do an audit against the paper's data files. It's still running, but the third thing it flagged was an error in their denominator that @VincentGeloso and I uncovered almost a decade ago.

My son is a senior and his school has this tool that allows you to see your odds of admission to a school based on your GPA and test scores based on others who applied from the school in the past . Changing the gender and race is always a fun exercise :) MIT is the most glaring.
