ALT Infographic titled "Local Elections 2022: STV Facts". Text reads: How do I vote? Mark candidates in order of preference starting with 1, 2, 3, etc. Don't use a cross! Do I need to rank every candidate? No. You can preference as many or as few as you like, but it's important to rank as many as you feel comfortable with. Can I hurt my first preference's chances by using later preferences? No. Later preferences only count if your first preference is elected or eliminated. How are votes counted? Based on the number of first preference votes, the minimum number of votes needed to win a seat is calculated. Any candidates with at least that many votes are elected. If they have more votes than that, the extra votes will transfer. If nobody has enough votes to win, lower placed candidates will be eliminated and their votes will transfer.
