Encouraging news for London: hospital admissions for young people assaulted with a knife have fallen by 55% since @SadiqKhan established the Violence Reduction Unit. A real impact of investing in prevention and supporting young people, We know there’s still more to do.
One million Londoners reached. Thousands fewer victims of violence.
Our @LDN_VRU is helping turn the tide, with hospital admissions for young people injured in knife assaults down 55% since 2019.
This shows what prevention can achieve, but there’s more to do.

ALT Infographic from the Mayor of London showing that the Violence Reduction Unit (VRU) has reached one million Londoners and is helping make London safer. A bar chart compares reductions in hospital admissions of young people for knife assault: London shows a 56% decrease, compared with a 48% decrease in the rest of England. Source: NHS hospital admissions data, comparing the 12 months to July 2026 with 2018/19. Throughout October, SLC is asking: what can make a difference for families of the disappeared?
The fifth on the list is truth.
In Sri Lanka, the truth about what happened to their loved ones, who was responsible and what action will be taken to hold perpetrators accountable still eludes thousands affected by enforced disappearances, even decades later.
International human rights law recognises that families of the disappeared have the right to the truth. This means that any refusal by the authorities to share information about any ongoing investigations, the fate or whereabouts of the missing and the identity of the perpetrators are in violation of that right.
For many families, the continuous denial of the truth by successive Sri Lankan governments has led to a deep sense of mistrust and a belief that the delays in justice are purposefully intended to make people forget what happened. Justice delayed is justice denied.
With the discovery of mass graves in Sri Lanka, such as at Chemmani, there is a renewed opportunity to establish the truth. If exhumations and investigations are conducted properly, as the current government has promised, this could mean a significant step forward towards accountability. Exhumations following the Bosnian war, for example, led to more than 75% of the roughly 31,500 people reported missing in Bosnia being accounted for. Establishing the truth there meant that families were able to process what happened to their loved ones and begin their journey of healing.

Sinhalese Professor Raj Somadeva’s involvement in both the Mannar and Chemmani mass-grave investigations raises serious questions about independence, transparency and public confidence.
Many Tamil genocide victims’ families, survivors and concerned members of the public have serious concerns about the credibility and impartiality of Professor Somadeva’s reports. They fear that the reports may contain deliberately false, dishonest or recklessly misleading statements that could mislead the public, undermine the search for truth and obstruct the pursuit of justice.
Professor Somadeva’s participation in a political event honouring Wimal Weerawansa, a Sinhala nationalist politician whom characterised as an extremist, also raises questions that deserve public scrutiny. These concerns are further heightened by his associations with the Rajapaksa family, whose members have faced allegations of genocide against Tamils, war crimes and crimes against humanity, and Rajapaksa’s personal advisor Ali Sabry, who has also faced accusations relating to crimes against humanity.
Given the gravity of the investigations involving Tamil victims, any potential conflicts of interest or concerns about independence must be addressed transparently. Where domestic processes lack the confidence of Tamil genocide victims and their families, an independent international investigation should be pursued to help establish the truth.
The evidence must withstand scrutiny. The investigation must be independent. Justice for Tamil genocide victims must not be compromised by protecting perpetrators or by political influence or institutional interests. #TruthAndJustice #EndImpunity #WarCrimes #CrimesAgainstHumanity #EelamTamils #TamilEelam #TamilHistory #JusticeDelayed #StopWhitewashing #NeverForget #TruthCannotBeBuried #RajSomadeva #ChemmaniMassGraves #MannarMassGrave #JusticeForVictims #EndMilitarisation. @NewsFromAmnesty @AgnesCallamard @MaryLawlorhrds @MassageIngrid @JDSLanka @PEARL_Action @FCDOGovUK

Some chatter on social media would have you believe that crime is out of control.
The facts tell a different story.
As @frasernelson has shown in his Substack today:
Violence is at its lowest level since the crime survey began in 1981.
Robbery is at a record low.
Crime, excluding fraud, is 78% down on its peak in 1995.
And the stats show this Government is delivering on its promises too:
Knife crime is down 11%.
Knife murders are at their lowest level in 35 years.
Thefts including phone snatching have fallen by 20% in the last year alone.
But I know there is more that we must do, and we will:
We’ve put more than 3,800 extra neighbourhood officers into roles, with named, contactable officers for every neighbourhood.
We’re introducing the most significant reforms to policing in a generation.
We are tackling rising rates of violence against women and girls through our landmark strategy.
And we are tackling crimes like fraud, more prevalent in our increasingly online world, with £250 million directed to this challenge in our Fraud Strategy published this year.
