May 2009. Tamil Eelam.
This is what the No Fire Zone looked like.
These images are seared into the psyche of the Tamil nation. The entire world watched. Some even took notes.
17 years on there has been no accountability. No justice. No answers.
We have not forgotten.
Nothing 'complex' about it.
When Jaffna library burned in 1981, Premadasa blamed him.
Weeks after Black July, he warned "in 14 minutes, the blood of every Tamil in the country can be sacrificed to the land by us".
Tamils don't need to wonder what might have been. He told us.
32 years since Gamini Dissanayake was assassinated by the LTTE.
A towering figure in Sri Lankan politics whose life and legacy remain part of our complex history. One cannot help but wonder what might have been🙏🏾

🕯 Tamils commemorate 68 killed in 1987 Jaffna Hospital massacre by Indian troops
Tamils gathered at Jaffna Teaching Hospital to remember the 68 doctors, nurses, staff and patients killed when Indian Peace Keeping Force (IPKF) troops stormed the hospital on 21 and 22 October 1987. The commemoration fell on the same day India marks its Police Commemoration Day.
No Indian soldier has been prosecuted, and India has never acknowledged or apologised for the massacre.

🚨 EXCLUSIVE: Chemmani archaeologist’s report contradicted by its own evidence
Tamil Guardian has obtained the interim report on the Chemmani mass grave. It says the site more closely resembles “formal burial practices” than a clandestine grave, and raises the possibility of an epidemic or natural disaster. It does not say how almost 600 people came to be buried there.
It holds up Skeleton 25 as a “relatively formal burial” without noting that the remains are of a girl aged four to five, found with a school bag and a toy. It presents a seated skeleton labelled 227 as being in a “meditation posture”. That skeleton was reported in September 2025 to have been found with its hands bound and its skull fractured.
The report says skull orientation shows no uniform pattern, while its own chart shows 72% facing north-west. In September 2025, Sri Lanka’s Human Rights Commission found a “reasonable likelihood” that the burials were the result of extrajudicial killings.
Shoes off, then he sang.
Deva in France last November, performing an Eelam song to commemorate fallen Tamil liberation fighters. Before singing, as a mark of respect, he took his shoes off on stage. A kartigaipoo, the national flower of Tamil Eelam, was projected behind him.
As he sang, the crowd cheered. The mark he left is indelible.
The composer died in Chennai on Saturday at 75.
Over four decades he scored more than 400 films and brought Chennai's gaana into the mainstream.
And he paid tributes like this.
Never forgotten.
European tourists have been flocking to Sri Lanka for the beaches and temples.
But this French woman found herself the target of assault by a Buddhist monk.
And when she complained to authorities she found herself hitting dead ends.

🚨 EXCLUSIVE - French tourist says she was assaulted by a Sinhala Buddhist monk, then pressured to drop her case
Speaking exclusively to the Tamil Guardian, Camille* says a young monk led her into a secluded room at the Kadurupokuna Jayasundara Purana Viharaya, put his hands on her and pushed her against a wall as she tried to flee.
At Tangalle police station, she says officers told her she could be prosecuted if the monk took his own life, as senior clergy looked on.
“He walked in and smiled,” she said.
The court hearing lasted less than two minutes. The monk remains free until February 2027, and Camille says she was warned she could face an international arrest warrant if she does not return.
Yet another London borough!
Wonderful to see ❤️💛
💫 Newham Council recognises January as Tamil Heritage Month
Newham Council unanimously passed a motion on 5 October recognising January as Tamil Heritage Month. The motion also puts the borough’s Thai Pongal celebration on a properly supported footing.
“Formal recognition is long overdue,” said Councillor Arshan Baskaran, who proposed the motion. Harrow, Redbridge, Hounslow, Sutton, Lewisham and Kingston already mark the month.

🚨 Tamil children are learning to identify grenades and anti-tank mines at school, Rosamund Pike says after minefield visit
The British actor, an ambassador for the Mines Advisory Group (@MAGsaveslives), visited minefields in Mannar and Mullaitivu in August.
“These deadly devices are remnants of a war they never witnessed,” she said. Just over 21 square kilometres of land remains contaminated, and displaced families are still waiting to return.

Children are being exhumed from a mass grave in Chemmani.
The Sri Lankan state's response is to investigate a four-year-old who mentioned it.
That tells you everything about what justice means on this island.
🚨 Sri Lankan police question parents of Tamil child who asked for Chemmani justice
A boy at a preschool sports day in Vadamarachchi East dressed as a child buried at Chemmani, carrying a placard that read: “many years ago, while I was drinking milk at my mother’s breast, they buried me. Will I get justice?”
After footage of the costume spread on social media, Sri Lankan police at Maruthankerny station called in the boy’s parents and his preschool teacher for questioning.

Sivarasa Anojan, 24, from Kalmunai, was sentenced to death in September over a Facebook comment deemed insulting to the Prophet Muhammad.
Saudi Arabia’s Supreme Court set the sentence aside on 13 October. It remains unclear whether he must still serve his original five-year prison term.

🚨 Ravikaran cites Maitreyi Ramakrishnan backlash in asking how Tamils can feel Sri Lankan
The Vanni MP told parliament on Friday that the uproar over the actor identifying herself as an Eelam Tamil showed why Tamils on the island cannot feel themselves Sri Lankan.
“The moment our child Maitreyi Ramakrishnan said she was a Tamil Eelam woman, there was uproar on this island and a pile-on on social media. When our being killed is your victory, how can you and we ever become one? Can cutting off one hand with the other be called a victory?”
Tamils had been killed by majoritarian rulers from the Gal Oya settlements of the 1950s through to Mullivaikkal in 2009, he said, and were still waiting as the witnesses died one by one.

✍️ Navi Pillay: a champion of justice and an inspiration to the Tamil people
As Navi Pillay is awarded the 2026 Nobel Peace Prize, Tamil-Canadian lawyer Harini Sivalingam reflects on meeting the then UN High Commissioner for Human Rights in Geneva in March 2009.
She recalls Pillay's challenge to the Tamil community to deepen its engagement with international human rights mechanisms, and her 2016 visit to York University to deliver the N. Sivalingam Memorial Lecture in Tamil Studies.

The woman who won the Nobel Peace Prize today once stood with the Tamil dead of Mullivaikkal.
On 19 May 2020, the eleventh anniversary of the genocide, Navi Pillay recorded this remembrance statement.
“I join in remembrance of the Tamil victims of the war that ended on the 18 May 2009.”
She added that some 146,000 Tamils had died “across the six decades struggle for self-determination”.
“It is important that we honour the Tamil victims and we inspire ourselves to continue their struggle for justice, freedoms and reparation.”
Today she is a Nobel Peace Laureate. Her words to Tamils in 2020 still stand.

Sri Lanka got there first.
If there were an award for lies, hatred, and blood libels, Navi Pillay wouldn’t just be a contender. She’d be a frontrunner.
Her role in the relentless, politically motivated demonization of Israel and promotion of the genoLIE speaks volumes.
Awarding Pillay the Nobel Peace Prize isn’t a recognition of justice. It’s the grotesque weaponization of an award to legitimize anti-Israel hatred and prejudice.
Now that the Nobel commission has rewarded the biggest lie of the 21st century, Joseph Goebbels is certainly applauding from hell.

🎤 A Conversation about ‘Thayakam’ - Interview with Amita Arudpragasam
Writer, artist, researcher and policy analyst Amita Arudpragasam sat down with Tamil Guardian ahead of the screening of her documentary ‘Thayakam’.

In August 2013, Navi Pillay became the first UN human rights chief to visit the island after the Mullivaikkal genocide.
She went to Jaffna, Kilinochchi, Mullaitivu and Trincomalee and met Tamil families searching for their disappeared.
When she left, the Sri Lankan police and military went to see the people she had met.
Before leaving the island, she said publicly that people in Mullaitivu had been visited by police or military officers “both before and after I arrived there”, and that “several people I met were subsequently questioned about the content of our conversation.”
Among those targeted were priests, journalists and human rights defenders.
At the time, Sri Lankan ministers and politicians attacked Pillay, and Tamil heritage, throughout her visit.
She says that visit convinced her that international pressure was needed for justice.
Today, Navi Pillay won the Nobel Peace Prize.

I mean it's terrible, but here is a reminder of how a Sinhala women's group marked International Women's Day in Sri Lanka in 2014 - stamping and smearing photographs of Navi Pillay.
Look at where they both are now.

Another month in occupied Tamil Eelam.
🪖 Occupation Watch - September 2026
Sri Lanka’s armed forces continued to embed themselves in civilian life across the North-East throughout September, organising programmes in schools and a girls’ hostel, providing healthcare and housing, and participating in religious events and coastal development. Alongside these activities, military facilities were expanded and international training continued in Trincomalee.
The military’s own accounts document a presence extending from classrooms and fishing harbours to island infrastructure and tourist beaches.
