20% of courtrooms are closed today. Worth remembering that when people suggest restricting jury trials. Juries aren’t the problem. They aren’t causing the delays. They aren’t halting justice.
They can’t get in the door.

Any competent government would have seen this problem hurtling towards them for months. And yet. Here we all are. Asking guilty offenders to queue nicely and wait a little longer for a prison bed to become available so that they can then be punished.

Last week my trial was adjourned because there was no heating in the court. Today 2/4 courts at St Albans are not sitting due to lack of heating.
@CEOofHMCTS and @DominicRaab need to get their house in order before they start criticising barristers for causing a backlog.

Today I prosecuted an application to dismiss, covering someone else’s case. That is an application made on behalf a defendant, where the defence say there is not sufficient evidence for a jury to convict. /1
