THURSDAY 16 JULY 2026 N'DAMENA,CHAD The Cabinet Secretary Ministry of Water and Water Sanitation and Irrigation Eng Eric Mugaa @mugaa_eric accopanied by Water Secretary Eng. Samuel Alima @EngSaoalima attended the first day of the African Water Forum in N’djamena, Chad. Held under the theme “From Vision to Action,” the forum seeks to accelerate political commitment and mobilize financing for water security across Africa. According to the World Bank’s global water initiative, “Water Forward,” launched in April 2026, Africa is facing an unprecedented water crisis. More than 400 million people currently lack access to safe drinking water. This challenge is worsened by the fact that 68% of natural disasters on the continent are related to drought or flooding, resulting in economic losses of up to 12% of Africa’s GDP. The Water Forward initiative integrates scalable infrastructure investments, policy reforms, private sector mobilization, and institutional strengthening. It positions water security as a central pillar of economic growth, poverty reduction, and climate action. Representing the Kenyan government, I presented our national action plan, as outlined in the ministerial master plans — NISIP and NAWASIP. In the ministerial forum, CS @mugaa_eric highlighted the government’s financial commitments to the water sector and irrigation development, aimed at achieving 100% water connectivity and food security. He also emphasized our ongoing efforts to scale irrigation coverage to 2.5 million acres, and the critical role of Kenya’s National Infrastructure Fund in delivering major capital-intensive projects. These include the planned construction of 50 mega dams, 200 medium dams, and 1,000 small dams across the country. This platform provided an excellent opportunity to showcase Kenya’s priorities and foster partnerships for sustainable water solutions.

WATER SECRETARY INSPECTS PROGRESS OF THE HISTORIC WAJIR FAECAL SLUDGE TREATMENT PLANT MODERNIZING SANITATION IN WAJIR This evening , Water and Sanitation Secretary Eng. Samuel Alima @EngSaoalima inspected the ongoing construction of the Wajir Faecal Sludge Treatment Plant (FSTP), located 5 kilometers from town. This essential facility is being built under the Water and Sanitation Development Program (WSDP) in collaboration with WAJIWASCO and the World Bank. The project aims to modernize the region's historic bucket toilet system. Because Wajir has a flat, sandy terrain and a high water table, standard pit latrines risk contaminating the local aquifer. This FSTP offers a safe, environmentally friendly waste-processing alternative. With construction now at 64% completion, the Water Secretary urged the contractor and consultant to increase mobilization and fast-track the remaining work for swift delivery.
