🚨 $5 MILLION SETTLEMENT: EEOC and @TheJusticeDept secure major action against Instacart for allegedly discriminating against American workers.
The agencies found evidence that Instacart's PERM recruitment practices favored temporary visa holders and created unlawful barriers for U.S. and American workers applying for jobs.
Up to $4 million will be available for affected applicants, with an additional $1 million in civil penalties.

ALT EOC and DOJ secure $5 million joint settlement with Instacart for discriminating against U.S. workers. “Today’s settlement makes clear that when employers erect unlawful barriers that harm American workers, the EEOC will act decisively... Discrimination against workers based on their American national origin has no place in our economy,” said Andrea Lucas, chair of the U.S. Equal Employment Opportunity Commission

Let’s go Harmeet!
Over $1M in back pay for Americans discriminated against in tech hiring!
While DOL works on fixing the PERM rules to BAN HIDDEN JOBs- we are thankful Harmeet is leading the DOJ to get cash payback for Americans who lost out on jobs!
We just secured a settlement with Cloudera after it failed to treat U.S. workers fairly. We sued them in April and appreciate the resolution. All employers are on notice: conduct good-faith recruitment of U.S. workers — or face the consequences. @CivilRights will always defend the rights of U.S. workers!

I am very proud of the Immigrant and Employee Rights Section’s work in investigating visa status and citizenship status discrimination. It is an honor to work with them. Thank you @AAGDhillon for your leadership in protecting U.S. workers.

You’ve got mail! @CivilRights notified jurisdictions nationwide that we are routinely deploying election monitors. On Tuesday, @theJusticeDept sent 12 trained monitors to observe elections in MA—no issues. We want all Americans to have confidence in the outcome of elections!

The @CivilRights Division is proud to protect the USERRA rights of our servicemembers, such as National Guard Staff Sergeant Gonzales, USA (R). We’ll always fight to ensure they can serve and defend our country without fear of losing their civilian jobs because of their service.

Had a great meeting with faith leaders of many denominations to discuss how @TheJusticeDept can do more to protect all Americans of faith from violence and discrimination, including through our federal civil and criminal work @CivilRights!

Hi everyone. My jurisdiction is limited by law and courts. We @CivilRights do as much as we can to expand liberty — within the boundaries set by law and courts. So tagging me on everything that annoys you is fine, but realize my very able team is only going to be able to do something about it if we have jurisdiction, law, and facts on our side, at a minimum! And then, policy priorities and resources.
The hazards of being a civil rights lawyer include having to explain this often and letting people down, but we are a nation of laws, not feelings.

Today, @CivilRights hosted a division-wide ice cream social, celebrating fellowship and the accomplishments of our team.
It was also great to honor my PDAAG @JesusOseteDOJ, who was just nominated by the President to be a federal judge!

Justice Department Secures $150,000 Settlement in Sexual Harassment Lawsuit Against Kentucky Landlord
“Tenants should not be forced to choose between safety and keeping a roof over their heads,” said @AAGDhillon. “This case involved a landlord’s sexual harassment of female tenants, including threats to evict tenants who refused his advances. The Justice Department will continue to hold landlords accountable for using their power to violate the rights of vulnerable women.”

The Justice Department announced today that it filed a lawsuit against Venkatachalam Mani, a landlord in State College, Pennsylvania, for sexually harassing a female tenant and retaliating against her when she refused his advances, in violation of the Fair Housing Act.
“The landlord failed to fix a tenant’s furnace despite freezing temperatures because the female tenant refused his sexual advances, forcing her family to move out with no other place to live,” said @AAGDhillon. “This conduct is illegal. The Justice Department will uphold the rights of female tenants to housing without the threat of sexual harassment by a landlord.”

Replying to @tampafin @CivilRights
This isn’t just a fine. @AAGDhillon has secured $2M in back pay for a class of American workers. That’s meaningful money for specific harmed workers.

We secured a $3.2 million settlement with OpenAI for discriminating against U.S. workers. Employers must recruit U.S. workers in good faith when sponsoring temporary visa workers for permanent residency via the PERM process. @CivilRights will hold violators accountable!

It’s illegal to sideline American workers in your quest to sponsor foreign labor for permanent residency. All tech companies should take notice!

I almost teared up at this. We’ve come a long way, baby. From @CivilRights at the time I was nominated to now is a total refocus of our mission and our people to serve ALL Americans, not just a few and not just pet projects. With liberty and justice for ALL!
Our @CivilRights Division at @TheJusticeDept is growing!

Affirmative action loopholes now are dead at @USEEOC. “The Commission’s rescission of the Affirmative Action Guidelines is consistent with the text of Title VII and Supreme Court precedent,” said EEOC Chair Andrea Lucas. “As our nation approaches its 250th birthday, we are reminded that the Founders’ vision rested on the enduring principle that every individual is created equal and therefore is entitled to equal treatment under the law. This week's action reaffirms that Title VII's protections apply equally to all American workers and that equal opportunity remains a defining commitment of our democracy.”
