Suicidal Empathy or Homicidal Virtue Signaling? Some of us talk about "suicidal empathy"...Excessive, misplaced compassion that puts outsiders, migrants, and even criminals above the safety and continuity of our own people. But evolutionary psychologist Dr. Dani Sulikowski makes a sharper case. She argues it's more like homicidal virtue signaling...not just naive self-harm. A lot of it is intrasexual competition, especially among women (and feminine-minded people) in our modern environment. People publicly champion extreme "compassionate" policies like open borders because it lets them signal moral superiority and sabotage the reproductive success and stability of their rivals. They often shield themselves from the worst consequences while the broader society pays the price: crashing birth rates, strained communities, weakened family formation and so on. What convinces me Sulikowski is closer to the truth? Look at East Asia. Japan, South Korea, China, Taiwan, etc. They're facing even worse fertility collapses than most Western countries, driven by economics, work culture, etc...But they aren't flooding themselves with mass low-skill immigration or pushing the same replacement-level demographic shifts. No "suicidal empathy" required. The West's unique combo of fertility suppression + active demographic replacement looks far more like competitive status-signaling dressed up as empathy.
