I’m excited to share my first first-authored paper from my #PhD work, out now in @FrontiersIn Cellular Neuroscience! We explored intrinsic properties of retinal ganglion cells which may contribute to their different responses in #vision: frontiersin.org/articles/10.…

Join us Tues 3/28 at 10am in 214 LH for Andrew Boal's @EyeBoal Dissertation Defense "Retinal Ganglion Cell Excitability and Adaptations to Ionic Stress in Glaucomatous Optic Neuropathy" completed in Dr. David Calkins lab in the Neuro Grad Program @VanderbiltBrain and @VUMCEye!
Honored to receive notice that my F30 is being funded by the @NatEyeInstitute! I’m grateful for the support I’ve received from @VanderbiltMSTP and @VanderbiltBrain and excited to continue exploring the interaction of astrocytes and retinal ganglion cells in #glaucoma. #mdphd
We found that sensitivity to potassium underlies differing excitability and action potential shapes in aON-S and aOFF-S RGCs. Interestingly, elevating potassium concentration shifts the responses of aON-S cells to resemble those of aOFF-S at baseline.
These findings may offer insight into key physiologic differences that cause some RGCs to degenerate more quickly than others in #glaucoma and lay the groundwork for future targets for #neuroprotection
This was such a wonderful opportunity! I really enjoyed getting to share some of our work in front of many of my science idols
So proud of @EyeBoal who last-minute subbed in for Michael Risner @iserworld @_BrightFocus this afternoon! Andrew talked about human RGCs cultured in multiple conditions and how the morphology of their axon initial segments changes depending on their environment 🧫👀🐭🧠
Grateful to have the support of @_BrightFocus and @iserworld to present my research and learn from some of the best in the #glaucoma field! This meeting is a wonderful learning opportunity for a young scientist. Come see me at poster #5 tonight!
👏 Please join us in congratulating these @_BrightFocus and @iserworld travel grantees!
We are honored to invest in these awardees’ continued success in vision #research.
Thank you to our sponsors for making these awards possible.

You can officially call me Dr. Naguib now!!! Today I successfully defended my PhD in neuroscience after 4 years of hard work. I am so unbelievably thrilled to be done #PhDone #PhinallyDone
I’m looking forward to hosting the trivia night to cap off this excellent conference we have planned! Come for the science, mentorship, and networking opportunities #doubledocs #mdphd
It's true! Our next #MDPhD meeting is happening soon! Join us from anywhere for a day full of #science, interactive breakout sessions, and making connections! Registration ($5) is open now, full schedule here: southeasternmdphd.org/agenda

It was an honor to write this with (and learn so much from) my co-mentors @LisaMonteggia and Dr. Ege Kavalali!
A key takeaway: the timing and location of BDNF action is critical in its downstream effects, which can be multiple and contradictory
Our latest work attempts to resolve BDNF in context:from synaptic regulation to psychiatric disorders. #neurotrophin #bdnf #depression #bipolardisorder sciencedirect.com/science/ar…

Grateful to have received a booster shot @VUMChealth. Sad that I had the opportunity to get a third shot while folks in my country have not had access to their first. Hard to feel anything but intense anger towards those who have that opportunity but don't take advantage of it.

New review from @EyeBoal (G3) out now in @MDPIOpenAccess Cells! This review covers how #astrocyte networks (not just individual cells) are involved in diseases like #glaucoma, and how these networks might be targeted therapeutically (open access): mdpi.com/2073-4409/10/6/1368…
