As I reflect on my visit to Lomé last week, I am reminded once again of the extraordinary potential of African women to lead and transform our continent.
From the remarkable women working tirelessly in our markets and communities to those serving in the highest offices of leadership, I witnessed the same strength, determination and commitment to making a difference.
But what touched me most was the power of solidarity, sisterhood and genuine care for one another. When women lift each other up, share their experiences, open doors and create opportunities for the next generation, leadership becomes more than a position. It becomes a collective force for transformation.
Our greatest strength lies not only in how far we rise, but in how many women we bring along with us.
I leave Togo deeply inspired and convinced that when African women stand together, across generations and all walks of life, there is no limit to what we can achieve.
A new week, a renewed commitment to lifting one another higher! ❤️🌍

I had a rich and constructive exchange in Lomé with my dear sister @CoumbaDSow United Nations Resident Coordinator in Togo, on women’s place in governance and leadership.
Togo has much to share: women in the highest offices, the unique entrepreneurial legacy of the Nana Benz, and a generation of ambitious young women. Together, we explored how to strengthen women’s influence and pass leadership on from one generation to the next.
Thank you to the United Nations system for this partnership. The best is yet to come! 💪🏾

Women already have the knowledge and skills to lead. What they need is access to land, financing, equipment, training and a real voice in decisions.
In Malawi, women in the pigeon pea value chain gained land, irrigation, tractors and training with support from @FAO , @OCPGroup and partners. Governments should invest in what works and adapt these models in other countries.
In the Lake Chad Basin, I saw how lost livelihoods deepen insecurity and make people vulnerable to recruitment by armed groups. Investing in economic opportunities for women and young people is also peacebuilding.
Member States must make sure commitments reach communities. And men and boys must be part of the change, from the household to the classroom, through the @AWLNetwork work on Positive Masculinity.

At the #WorldFoodForum2026 side event "Women in Agrifood Systems: Breaking Barriers at the Frontlines of Crises," I spoke about the realities of women in conflict-affected communities across Africa.
It is time to move from recognizing women's contributions to ensuring their meaningful participation in decisions on food security, resilience and recovery. 🧵 1/2

2⃣What we need:
✅Flexible, long-term financing for women-led organizations and grassroots cooperatives
✅Stronger protection against violence and intimidation
✅Greater investment in women's economic empowerment as a foundation for sustainable peace
At @AWLNetwork , we continue to advocate for the AU-CEVAWG. Continental commitments must become concrete protection at the grassroots level.
Move from commitments to investment, from consultation to decision-making power, and from recognizing women's resilience to resourcing their leadership.
There can be no sustainable food security without women's security, economic empowerment and leadership.

Dr. Olumide Ajayi, ED, @alf_NGR called for a care-responsive approach to WASH financing, one that asks who carries the time, labour, health and safety costs when essential services are inadequate.
His message: use gender-responsive budgeting to ensure WASH investments deliberately reduce unpaid care burdens and expand women’s opportunities for education, livelihoods and participation.
Success is not simply how much we spend, but what changes in women’s lives.

Ms. Fatia Atugonza, Program Manager, Gender Justice & Women’s Rights, Oxfam in Uganda brought attention to the often-invisible connection between inadequate WASH services and unpaid care work.
Reducing that burden means investing in services that give women back time, dignity and opportunity, while ensuring their lived experiences inform the decisions and investments intended to serve them.
Care work must be recognised, reduced and redistributed.

Dr. Fortunata Songora Makene, ED, Economic & Social Research Foundation underscored the importance of evidence in shaping investment decisions that respond to the realities of women’s unpaid care work.
Investing in WASH is more than providing infrastructure, it can help release women’s time for education, livelihoods, entrepreneurship and greater economic participation.
The challenge is to ensure that evidence on women’s care burdens translates into planning, financing and measurable action.

Facilitating the session on Financing Gender-Transformative WASH at the #8GIMACRECs Strategic Meeting, @VingiPaul helped bring WASH, care and public finance into one conversation.
The discussion challenged stakeholders to ensure that investments do more than deliver infrastructure, they must address the unequal burden of care, strengthen women’s participation in decision-making and translate gender commitments into budgets, services and measurable results.
