On Monday I exited my #phd viva with only typos (typos! *shakes fist*) to correct. 'Relief' doesn't cover it!
HUGE thanks to examiners @IanRHartley + @jon_seabirds, supervisor @SamCPatrick and friends and family for everything in the last 4 1/2 years.
#phdone @SEG_UL @ACCE_DTP
Always a pleasure to present at @asab_org, especially this time given its likely to be the last presentation of my #phd!
Last talk of #ASABSpring2024 by @FR_McCully on coordinated parental care, where costs of parental care are more evenly distributed. She looked at how black-legged kittwakes coordinated care in the short- and long-term at “The Arctic’s creepiest soviet ghost town.”

Thrilled that work by @pauledwardrose and myself is on the cover of the latest issue of Biological Sciences Review. The article was a joy to write!

Does personality matter for breeding Kittiwakes? My first news article with @oxsci reporting on some fascinating research by @FR_McCully & @SEG_UL is out now: oxsci.org/personality-matter…
Once again, a great time was had writing for the @ConversationUK this time on our kittiwake personality and re-pairing paper!
Read it here 👉 theconversation.com/compatib…
So @tash_gillies is the scientist I want to be when I grow up- check out her fab new paper below!
Excited to see our new paper, led by myself and @luciamartinaml, published in @PNASNews! We look at movement trajectories of wandering #albatross and find they orient towards to v low frequency 'infrasound' 1/n

It took 6yrs but out today @PNAS 1st evidence infrasound is a reliable cue for movment decisions tinyurl.com/53betb2n Read our persepctive on how & why here tinyurl.com/4c4h4ca5 & how infrasound might be heared here tinyurl.com/42uws2ae. Huge thanks to @HFSP for funding
1/4 I am not done yet but…I’m prepared to call it…
🚨My FAVOURITE #PhD chapter is out NOW in Ethology! 🚨
Seabird pairs with similar personalities ➡️ are better parents ➡️ decreasing their re-pairing risk
#OpenAccess 👉 onlinelibrary.wiley.com/doi/…
@SEG_UL #Seabirds @ACCE_DTP
3/4 Kittiwakes mated according to personality at one colony but not the other 🤔
In both colonies, similar partners had better breeding success. Chick survival made re-pairing less likely ➡️
An INDIRECT effect of personality on re-pairing in a long-lived, monogamous bird!

ALT A line graph showing the relationship between the probability of breeding failure and the similarity of personalities with pairs. The line from the model slopes down from the left to the right of the graph. There are dark points representing breeding attempts which demonstrate success or failure. Grey shading represents the confidence intervals. As the similarity between pairs decreases, there are more points associated with failure than when similarity is high.
4/4 Similar pairs may find it easier to cooperate during #parentalcare.
But #matechoice is complicated and is certainly influenced by more than just #personality…
Not all that different from humans, in my opinion!
