Success. After just under two months in Austin, I went home with a woman from a bar. This was my first time doing that, ever. She’s gorgeous. We spent the night and morning cuddling and kissing. But no, she struck up a conversation with me and even started being a little flirty. But I had already spent an hour talking to the first woman, so I smiled, wished her well, and she went upstairs with her friend. It’s bizarre being in a situation like “hey, this could be your future wife, but you’re telling her goodbye to focus on this other person, who also could be your future wife.” And of course, thinking about it in those terms is stupid (just find someone you like hanging out with) but it doesn’t change that it’s true. The harder work was to have my apartment ready for when someone wanted to come home with me. I got my furniture from home about a month ago, but I kept sleeping on the airbed out of laziness. After a month of that, I finally ordered bed sheets, shower curtains, a toilet brush, hand soap, a pizza cutter, knives, silverware, dish soap, detergent, and dozens of other things you don’t think about until you realize you need them. Getting your space set up to host is such a huge chore that it felt insurmountable with depression. Now that I know I can attract someone, I’ll be looking for a relationship over the next several weekends. Probably months. But it’s fun. Which I didn’t expect, because dating apps are an absurd amount of work. (In-person is a lot of work too, but you do it up front: pick a nice outfit, clean your place, etc, so the actual experience is enjoyable instead of scanning your bio for the 30th time for improvements.)
