Today I spoke directly to Albertans following yesterday’s referendum vote.
Alberta will remain in Canada, and for as long as I serve as premier, there will not be another referendum on the issue of separation.
I’m also pleased that Albertans also gave our government a mandate to take greater control over immigration, to ensure temporary residents pay their share of the services they use and to require proof of citizenship to vote. Those reforms are coming, and they will strengthen Alberta’s autonomy.
Now is the time to move forward not as a people divided by how we voted yesterday, but as neighbours, friends, Albertans and Canadians.
Together, we will keep Alberta and Canada forever strong and free.

A huge win for Alberta, vulnerable Albertans and their families. And yet another sign our country is getting back on track after the Trudeau years.
Alberta’s UCP government was proud to pass legislation last spring that prohibited MAID for individuals whose sole underlying medical condition is a mental illness.
We’re pleased to see the federal government has announced they will be following our lead and won’t be moving ahead with their planned expansion of MAID to those whose sole underlying condition is mental illness.
This is the common sense approach we’ve been calling for since the beginning. Well done Alberta! And kudos to the Feds for changing direction.

One Liberal MP had the guts to do what's right today and vote with Conservatives and NDP to protect Canadians suffering from mental illness from euthanasia. Just one, unfortunately, so the bill did not pass.

In Parliament, MP Dean Allison reflected on the Allison Inquiry and its purpose: to listen to Canadians injured by Covid-19 vaccines.
He spoke about the four days of deeply emotional testimony, including witnesses who came forward on behalf of family members who had died. Among them was Crystal, who testified about her brother Scott Gorry, a former Parliament Hill employee who had hoped to testify himself before his death.
Dean Allison recognized the courage of the witnesses who travelled from across Canada, as well as the MPs, Shawn and Teresa Buckley, volunteers, and families who made the Inquiry possible.
“The stories were difficult, but they needed to be heard.”
The testimony was heard. Now, the stories must not be forgotten.

Liberal government says they WILL delay access to MAiD for the mentally vulnerable indefinitely.
They will table their own bill on the issue this fall.

Stay tuned...but this is a victory today for the protection of those who struggle with mental illness.
Liberals will likely vote against C-218 as a block. This means it may fail today.
However, the Liberals will deal with the issue in a forthcoming bill.
This good progress and announcement today is due, in large part, to the strong work of MP Tamara Jansen and all of you who made calls (more than 6,000 in the last week!) and prayed.
