NEW: King Charles addresses CHOGM in Antigua, saying there is truth in the phrase “small island, big vibes”. He directly addresses Britain’s role in the transatlantic slave trade:
• The King says “our history inspires us, can appall us, yet it can always teach us.”
• He calls the transatlantic slave trade a “shameful chapter of history is one that fills my heart with horror and my soul with the most profound personal sorrow.” And that it “still cast a shadow over these [Caribbean] islands”.
• King Charles then goes onto say “yet evil may not have the last word” and that we can “address wrongs of the past with action for the future”.
• He winds down his remarks on Britain’s role in enslaving human beings by saying “we cannot command the winds, least of all where the winds of yesterday have delivered us - but we can choose how we set our sail.”

After his speech, Charles watched a cultural performance about the history of Antigua and Barbuda, which appeared to reference the slave trade and the impact on the island nations. “What happened in the darkness must come to the light,” was one of the performers’ lines.
