Another Civil Rights Leader Doubles Down On Opposition To Fluoridation Rev. Dr. Gerald L. Durley has renewed his longstanding opposition to water fluoridation, penning a letter directed to the National Kidney Foundation (below). "Dear Sirs: I was one of those who were privileged to work with and march next to Martin Luther King Jr., John Lewis, and others in the early civil rights days of the 1960s. Since then I became a psychologist and was also the pastor of Providence Missionary Baptist Church in Atlanta for 25 years. I have continued to be active to this day in helping resolve civil rights issues. This is why I'm writing to you about harm from fluoridated water, particularly for African American kidney patients. I have a dear friend on dialysis. I see how her life has been impacted. I receive mailings from the National Kidney Foundation (NKF). But I've never seen anything warning that kidney patients are especially susceptible to risks from fluorides. The federal government has acknowledged this in government reports since at least the 1990s, but the silence is deafening. Your website acknowledges that fluorides must be filtered out of water used for dialysis, because people have died or been injured if it's not removed from the dialysis water. But one has to dig deep into your website to find this out, if they even know to look for it. I never knew this. My friend never knew this. It's common sense to very clearly and openly warn people about fluorides and fluoridated water in their home and life, when they are in an especially susceptible group. And why not tell people with kidney cancer, kidney stones, transplant, etc? I've always respected what NKF does. But will you now stand up and speak out and oppose water fluoridation? We had to stand up and speak out against wrongs back in the 1960's. Will you do so today, issuing a statement opposing water fluoridation? Doctors used to promote cigarettes. We used to use leaded gas. Now we know better and we made a CHANGE. Will NKF be the change and speak out against fluoridation, and help kidney patients? I encourage you to be on the right side of history. This issue is only going to get bigger." In Christian Service, Rev. Dr. Gerald L. Durley Pastor Emeritus
Civil Rights, Fluoridegate, and Harm from Fluoridated Water to Kidney Patients Civil rights leader and former U.N. Ambassador, Andrew Young, has renewed his opposition to water fluoridation with a letter addressed to Dr. Oz and The National Kidney Foundation. "The Fluoridegate scandal is all about the fact that groups keep trying to not call water fluoridation what it is: an old, harmful idea whose time to end has come. People need to actively speak out, not wait for "somebody else” to do it. So I’m speaking out. I encourage others to do so, on social media, in the regular press, in conversations with family members, in water utility board meetings and in discussions with government officials. I hope that each of your organizations will openly and publicly, today – not in the future – oppose water fluoridation."

"The FDA announced a voluntary nationwide recall of more than 4.3 million tubes of fluoride toothpaste. The recalled products were sold under brands including Brush Buddies, Crayola, Hot Wheels, My Little Pony, evo, ARU and BB. The recall involves multiple flavors, sizes and expiration dates and was initiated because of current good manufacturing practice deviations. What you can do: Consumers who have recalled products should stop using them and contact the retailer or manufacturer for information about returns or refunds."

UPDATE - 99 communities serving water to over 30 million people have now ended, suspended, or prevented water fluoridation since the federal court ruling that fluoridation poses an "unreasonable risk to human health". The latest community to say NO to fluoridation is Phenix City, Alabama. Keep going! Any guesses who will be #100?

WASHINGTON STATE -"The City of Centralia will continue to treat its drinking water with fluoride after an hour-long information session and discussion ended in a five-to-two vote on Tuesday night. The city began treating its water with fluoride in 1959 and, at least for the time being, it will keep doing so. In the end, five city councilors voted to end any consideration of ceasing the treatment. Councilors Tucker Voetberg and Kevin Curtis were the sole votes against the motion, citing concerns around consent, which were also raised during public comment."

ALABAMA - "At the Oct. 6 Phenix City Council meeting, utility officials presented a formal proposal—and the council subsequently approved a resolution—to permanently discontinue adding hydrofluorosilicic acid (HFS) to the municipal water supply. Utility representatives cited extreme safety risks for plant employees handling the concentrated corrosive byproduct of fertilizer production. Photographic evidence presented to the council showed severe chemical etching on concrete floors, completely frosted-over safety glass doors, and ruined stainless-steel equipment and security camera housings caused by airborne vapors. Officials also noted that HFS is not required by ADEM drinking water standards. Discontinuing its use will eliminate hazardous working conditions and reduce heavy maintenance costs (such as replacing chemical pumps every six months), while leaving the taste and quality of drinking water unaffected."

WASHINGTON STATE - "City leaders in Cheney are starting the process of potentially removing fluoride from the city's drinking water, citing aging equipment, maintenance challenges and public concerns. The city has been adding fluoride to its drinking water for more than five decades, but notified residents this month that it has begun the required 90-day notification process with the Washington State Office of Drinking Water as it considers ending fluoridation. Officials say its fluoridation equipment would require costly replacement and maintaining consistent fluoride levels has become challenging because each of Cheney's wells contains different naturally occurring amounts of fluoride. A public comment session is scheduled for October 13 at Cheney City Hall, and written comments can also be submitted by email during the notification period."

Why does fluoride in tap water follow a single standard when everyone drinks differently? In 1930s D.C., NIH’s Dr. H. Trendley Dean & Dr. Frederick McKay weighed dental fluorosis vs. cavity protection to set the 1 ppm standard. The Ridgeland board voted 5-4 to approve restarting sodium fluoride in the public water supply during a meeting Tuesday night. Before the final vote, some board members raised concerns about the product. “I’m opposed to putting poison in our drinking system that is not prescribed by any doctor, and does not have any pharmacy involved in the process,” one board member said. “Frankly, it kind of scares me. So, without any testing, we’re just going to get it and dump it in our drinking water. I think that is a valid concern,” another board member said. About five years ago, the board voted to discontinue the use of fluoride in Ridgeland. City leaders said it was largely due to a shortage of fluoride following the COVID-19 pandemic. As a result, the city didn’t have access to it. Alderman DI Smith questioned why the city is reverting back to using fluoride now. “That’s a good question. Why now? Have there been any studies to show whether there has been an increase in cavities? Is there any need for it now that we all have toothpaste that has fluoride in it,” Smith said. Public works will now move forward with the purchases. A timeline for when the change will go into effect has not been confirmed.
MISSISSIPPI - Ridgeland Pressured To Keep Fluoride In Water After Voting To Remove It "Ridgeland city officials will be hearing from state leaders next week on why they should keep fluoride in the water. In December, the Board of Aldermen voted to take the first step to officially remove fluoride from the treatment process, which would be hearing a presentation from the Mississippi State Department of Health."

WISCONSIN - "Two Rivers residents will soon have access to free fluoride products after the city decided to stop adding fluoride to its municipal water supply. Beginning Nov. 1, while supplies last, residents can pick up free fluoridated toothpaste at City Hall during normal business hours. Fluoride tablets also will be available through the public health vending machine at the Two Rivers Fire Department." FAN NOTE: We take no issue with handing out free tubes of fluoride toothpaste, but dispensing fluoride tablets (which require a prescription) through a public "vending machine" seems highly irresponsible.
WISCONSIN - City Council Votes to Remove Fluoride from Two Rivers Drinking Water "The Two Rivers City Council voted 7 to 2 Tuesday night to discontinue the addition of the mineral to its public water. City Manager Kyle Kordell said the conversation began in July. "It's hard to answer these questions about why do you do it this way, why do you put fluoride in the water and the real answer is because we've always done it this way. So we thought it was time for a fresh decision." City Council Member Katherine Dahlke said she is hearing safety concerns from residents. "There has been a growing reaction from the citizens of Two Rivers saying we don't want this in our water anymore," Dahlke said. The discussion is growing across Wisconsin and nationwide. Last year, Utah became the first state to ban fluoride statewide. In Wisconsin, only about 30% of municipalities add fluoride to their water, according to the DNR."

MICHIGAN - City of Battle Creek officials say they have temporarily reduced the amount of fluoride added to the city’s drinking water to conserve supplies amid a nationwide shortage of fluoridation chemicals and rising costs. The city will continue to add fluoride and is maintaining a concentration of approximately 0.50 milligrams per liter (mg/L) in treated drinking water. That is below the recommended community water fluoridation target of 0.70 mg/L but above the naturally occurring level of approximately 0.15 to 0.20 mg/L. The city began the adjustment August 21 and they plan to seek additional supply and more stable pricing through a future bidding process. Based on current projections, existing fluoride supplies should last through at least December. The city notified the Michigan Department of Environment, Great Lakes, and Energy, which reported that other water systems across Michigan are facing similar supply challenges."
